They found lead in the water fountains in my kids’ elementary school in Newton, MA. The result? The water fountains were turned off until further notice. But what about lead in the water in my house? We do have a filtration system, but I also decided to test our water for lead and other unhealthy substances.
Keeping your family healthy involves countless decisions, from the food you buy to the products you use daily. An area that often gets overlooked is what comes out of your faucets. Whether you rely on the city’s water supply or a private well, the quality of your household drinking sources can change over time. Understanding what’s in your drinking supply and setting up a routine to check it gives you clarity and confidence about something your family uses constantly.
Unseen Dangers of Common Contaminants in Household Water
Many contaminants are invisible, odorless, and tasteless. Testing helps you identify them before they affect your family’s health or your home’s plumbing. Common contaminants to be aware of include:
- Bacteria and viruses: Microorganisms like E. Coli or Giardia can enter systems through runoff, flooding, and plumbing issues. These organisms are prevalent in potable water across 38 countries and can cause short-term gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Heavy metals: Lead, arsenic, and mercury may leach from older pipes or soil surrounding wells. These metals can pose long-term health concerns, especially for children.
- Chemicals and industrial byproducts:> These may include chlorine used for disinfection, agricultural pesticides, and volatile organic compounds from household or commercial sources.
Each of these contaminants requires different treatment methods, which is why knowing exactly what’s present is essential.
Beyond Health and How Water Quality Affects Your Home
Poor water quality can affect more than your health. It can also wear down your home’s systems. Hard minerals like calcium and magnesium in tap water (TW) leave scale on pipes, fixtures, and appliances. Over time, this buildup can reduce pressure, shorten appliance lifespans, and increase energy use.
Changes in the color, smell, and taste can signal shifts in the distribution system or plumbing. Testing helps you identify the source of these issues, so you can address them promptly.
Is Bottled Water a Truly Safe Alternative?
Many families rely on bottled water (BW) when they’re unsure about the safety of their home supply. It may seem like a quick and reliable fix, but most BW isn’t guaranteed to be free of contaminants.
Studies have shown that BW can contain as many as 240,000 particles of microplastics per liter. Concerningly, past research into BW has found that many brands are sourced from the same municipal supplies as those in your tap, at a price as high as 1,900 times more than TW, despite being no purer.
Purity matters because BW is regulated differently from TW. The FDA sets manufacturing standards, but allowable contaminant levels still exist and are sometimes outdated in relation to the latest health research. Even plastic bottles can release toxins, which is why sourcing a reputable supplier is crucial for maintaining ongoing health. Bottles release nano and microplastics, especially after sun exposure, increasing your consumption.
Responsible manufacturers should clearly state where their BW is sourced, such as from a natural artesian aquifer, underground source, or purified municipal water. The method of purification is also important, and consumers should consider whether they want to ingest BW that has undergone reverse osmosis or vapor compression distillation to remove impurities.
Ultimately, home testing is the only sure way to have an accurate picture of the quality your family ingests, whether you use TW or BW.
A Parent’s Guide to Home Water Testing
Home testing helps you track changes and respond to them before problems escalate. You have two main options.
1. A DIY Test Kit
DIY kits are affordable and straightforward to use. They often include strips or vials that react to certain minerals and chemicals. They’re a good first step, especially if you’re curious about noticeable changes in taste or smell.
These kits can help you screen for chlorine levels, hardness, pH, nitrates and nitrites, and some bacteria.
2. Call a Professional Testing Company
A certified laboratory provides the clearest view of your water’s makeup. Professional tests detect contaminants that DIY kits can’t, including lead, arsenic, mercury, bacteria and viruses, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds.
Certainty is especially important if you have infants, young children, or anyone with a weakened immune system in the home. Also, test if you use a well supply, your home has older plumbing, or a DIY test shows concerning results
Your Water Testing Schedule
A routine helps you stay ahead of changes and gives you year-to-year peace of mind. Plan to test approximately every three years if you have municipal or TW. Use DIY tests once a year to check noticeable changes in smell, taste, or clarity. When using well or spring water, schedule an annual test with a state-certified laboratory to ensure drinking safety. Wells are more vulnerable to shifts in nearby soil, runoff and seasonal weather patterns.
Test your water sooner after major plumbing work, flooding, or heavy storms, if you notice unexplained staining on sinks or laundry, and when your water tastes or smells different than usual.
What Is the Importance of Testing Water?
Potable water is part of nearly every routine in your home, from cooking to bathing to making your child’s lunch. A testing routine protects that foundation. By understanding what’s in your tap or bottle, you can take small, proactive steps that support your family’s health and your home’s longevity. Start a water testing schedule in 2026.
