Today, I stand with others across the cultural community to honor the victims and survivors and call on leaders to ensure a nuclear weapon is never used again. The Japanese side of my family is from Hiroshima. No more Hiroshimas. No More Nagasakis.
The stories we tell matter. In 1983, The Day After reached 100 million Americans and helped convince President Reagan to urgently pursue nuclear arms reductions. Storylines about nuclear weapons helped pave the way for historic treaties that reduced worldwide stockpiles by 80 percent.
But for the first time in 40 years, the number of nuclear weapons in the world may go up, not down.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We have power, but we have to use it. Let’s all take action today.
The Nuclear Threat Initiative is a nonprofit, nonpartisan global security organization focused on reducing nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats imperiling humanity. NTI collaborates with governments and organizations to raise awareness, advocate, and implement creative solutions.
