Where Can I Complete a Training to Become a Fitness Instructor?

Where Can I Complete a Training to Become a Fitness Instructor?

Posted on May 30, 2025June 30, 2025 by Pragmatic Mom

For many parents, finding a career that balances financial stability, personal fulfillment and quality family time can be challenging. The traditional 9-to-5 job doesn’t always fit the reality of parenting with school runs, attending sporting events and extracurricular activities. For people who enjoy making a difference in others’ lives, having the flexibility to work while maintaining their mental and physical health seems like a far-fetched reality, but being a fitness instructor offers all these perks and more.

The health and fitness market is projected to grow to $202.78 billion by 2030 because people are looking to improve their lifestyles. Reasons include a greater awareness of health issues, increasing consumer disposable income, and rising prevalence of diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. All this is fueling the market and paving the way for more instructors to rise to the occasion.

A fitness instructor job appeals to business-oriented individuals who enjoy the flexibility and recurring revenue models. Whether you’re looking for a side hustle or a full-time career, learning where you can complete training to become a fitness instructor will get you started on the right path.

Understanding Your Training Program

Obtaining an instructor license equips you with the skills and knowledge to meet fitness goals and help others reach theirs. These programs cover various topics, including exercise, behavioral psychology, practical application of training principles, client assessments and injury prevention. Each training program differs, so choose the one that best suits your needs.

1. Zumba® Instructor License

Zumba is a globally recognized fitness format that incorporates various dance styles into a dance-based class. It’s known for international music, making it an inclusive program for participants worldwide. One of the nicest perks of obtaining a Zumba® Instructor License is that while having a dance and fitness background is advantageous, you don’t need prior experience.
More than 15 million people worldwide take Zumba classes to improve their cardiovascular health. The moderately intensive exercise targets your body parts and suits people of all fitness levels. There are only two requirements when studying for a <Zumba® instructor license — age and commitment.

People who want to earn their Zumba® Instructor License must be 18 years or older. You can complete training to become a fitness instructor in three simple steps:

  • Sign up for training: You can take your instructor course in person, on demand or livestream.
  • Get your license: There’s no formal written test, so once you’ve completed your training, you can teach Zumba anywhere.
  • Join the Zumba® Instructor Network: Joining the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN) ensures you can access the resources and tools that make your instructor journey successful.

Key Features

Zumba is a scalable and profitable way to teach suite fitness classes when you get your license:

  • ZIN: In your ZIN membership, you get a license to teach, access to monthly music and choreography resources, instructor applications and global community support.
  • Zumba formula: You can access Zumba’s three-element formula, ensuring your classes offer a new and dynamic experience.

Methodology

You choose your training and ongoing support

  • Training: There are two training formats. Courses that are livestreamed or in person take nine hours. Training on demand offers a 10-hour module broken into 16 sessions that you complete at your own pace.
  • Teaching license: Your ZIN membership can renew and upgrade your teaching license.

2. AFAA Certified Fitness Instructor

The Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) has two goals: to change bodies and to transform instructors’ lives. Since its inception in 1983, AFAA has certified over 350,000 instructors and is committed to practical and science-based instruction.

The fitness group’s mission is to inspire instructors and students to reach their full potential and best results through fitness training for their minds and bodies. To ensure students receive the best care, instructors undergo rigorous training and attend workshops to get hands-on experience and training from industry experts.

In addition to workshop training, instructors get access to lectures, exercises, demo and cueing videos, and class planning templates. You can also use the new digital platform that allows you to study from the comfort of your home while easily accessing material from any device. You can take your exam online or in person, and once you qualify, your certificate is valid for two years before renewal.

Key Features

Complete the Certified Group Fitness Instructor (CGFI) program if you want to complete training to become a fitness instructor. You must sign up, take your online courses, write and pass the exam, and then qualify as an AFAA CGFI.

Here are some key features you’d receive when signing up:

  • Science-based curriculum: The teaching material covers a range of class design, safety, and teaching methodologies.
  • Textbooks: You have access to 347 pages of scientific and evidence-based material.
  • Quizzes:

Methodology

You choose your training and ongoing support:

  • Training: Choose between three packages suitable for you. They are self-study, premium self-study, and all-inclusive.
  • Exam access: You have 180 days from the purchase date to complete your course, which generally takes six to eight weeks.
  • Qualifications: While previous experience is not required, the exam requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

3. ACE Group Fitness Instructor Certification

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has certified 90,000 fitness trainers. It intends to help more people by empowering exercise professionals and health coaches to provide leadership and programs for students to reach their goals. The nonprofit organization (NPO) partners with several organizations to give fitness instructors and health coaches a broad understanding of courses to increase physical activity in their classes.

While physical activity is essential, ACE also adopts the ACE Mover Method, which monitors behavioral change to empower people. Exercise combined with a positive mindset gives you a healthy lifestyle. You should engage in 30 minutes of exercise nearly every day to enhance your mood and reduce stress levels. During your course, you will learn about empathy, trust, communication, and collaboration because you’ll use these tools when developing bonds with your students in the ACE Mover philosophy.

Part of your training will include taking a personalized approach to your students. You’ll learn about teaching techniques, cueing strategies, understanding your students’ health restraints, and how to teach classes outdoors and online.

Key Features

ACE teaches a holistic approach to class design in its Group Fitness Instructor Certification Study Program, including alignment, motivation, and inclusivity. You’ll also learn about:

  • Skills: You’ll develop skills to demonstrate and teach a dynamic and engaging class.
  • Programs: You’ll understand how to select music, follow safety regulations, find motivation techniques, and show compassion to your class while reaching the desired goals.

Methodology

You choose the study program that’s most suitable for you:

  • Training: Choose between a basic, plus, and advantage program that offers different features ranging from practice exams and quizzes to live webinars for support>
  • Qualifications: You must be 18 or older and have an adult CPR and AED certificate with a hands-on skill check. You must also have a high school diploma or equivalent.

4. NETA Group Exercise Instructor Certification

The National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) changed its name in 2004 because of an expansion in program offerings. Since its inception in 1977, the NPO has certified more than 160,000 fitness professionals in several courses. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredits its Group Exercise Instructor program, and the credentials are recognized in most fitness facilities nationwide.

The NCCA-accredited association helps fitness instructors by providing high-quality education at affordable rates. It offers evidence-based programs and practical applications to ensure instructors are well-equipped for their classes.

NETA uses five core foundations in teaching:

  • Comprehensive: The programs will challenge, engage and prepare you for leadership roles.
  • Inclusive: Your professional expertise will improve in diverse settings.
  • Interactive: Regardless of your learning choice, NETA ensures your program helps your interactive and collaboration skills.
  • Committed: As an NPO, it provides education that’s accessible and affordable for any income bracket.
  • Progressive: NETA designs programs to help you progress to the next step of your career.

Key Features

NETA offers several key features to help your journey:

  • Insurance: The NPO offers an insurance discount, especially for fitness instructors and others in teacher training programs.
  • Resources: Once you sign up, you can access additional resources like the exam candidate and recertification handbooks.

Methodology

Choose the training that ensures your success:

  • Training:
  • Qualifications: You need an adult CPR certification, be 18 years old, or hold a high school or General Educational Development diploma.

5. Jazzercise

Jazzercise combines dance, strength, and cardio in choreographed group classes. Instructor training includes an audition, online modules, and mentorship with a community focus. Judi Sheppard Missett founded Jazzercise in 1969 as an exercise program. She was a professional dancer and heeded the call of women who wanted to dance while staying fit.

The studio focuses on three pillars, which it instills in fitness instructors to carry out in their classes:

  • Motivate: Your job as an instructor is to make your students feel welcome, accepted and valued.
  • Cultivate: Create an environment where your students are comfortable making friends and feel safe.
  • Innovate: Instructors ensure they use the latest songs and science-backed fitness routines.

Jazzercise dance workouts help burn calories, strengthen your heart and lungs, and improve bone density. The classes are successful because they are designed to help students reach maximum body intensity through cardio and strength workouts while enhancing their mental well-being. The dance routines cater to all ages and diversity, so your training programs will prepare you to teach inclusive classes while focusing on students’ psychological and physical well-being.

Key Features

After training to become a fitness instructor, you’ll have access to the newest routines:

  • Benefits: You get access to VIP routines, ongoing education, choreography materials, marketing materials, and discounts on Jazzercise clothing.
  • Program: After you complete your training and pass the exam, you become a franchise owner.

Methodology

Apply when you’re ready and open the door to a world of ongoing support and training:

  • Training: The training process is five weeks long and is concluded with an instructor audition.
  • Process: You can become an instructor in three steps — step one is to submit your application and await further instructions for your screening to be approved. Step two is to stay in contact with your training specialist for four weeks. Your specialist will prepare you for everything you need to know for your audition. The last step is to submit the video after recording. Unlike traditional methods, this exam helps your training specialist view your skills and decide if you can start a franchise.

Master Being a Fitness Instructor and Parenthood

For parents, choosing a career that provides personal satisfaction and flexibility is a priority. The fitness industry delivers on both counts, offering opportunities in a growing sector to individuals ready to make the change for their children, themselves, and the people they’ll impact.

Becoming a fitness instructor allows you to design a schedule that suits you. If you own a franchise, you determine your prices, and if you’re working in a studio or online, you choose your times. Each brand is reputable and offers you the freedom to reach your goals. When you become a fitness instructor, you gain the freedom, flexibility, and fulfillment every parent desires.
