What fun to meet Vicky Fang at her Ava Lin book launch at Newtonville Books. This kicks of the Summer Reading Events at this wonderful bookstore!
Jarrett Lerner interviewed Vicky about her newest early chapter book series:

Newton connections: Both Josh Funk and Vicky Fang grew up in Newton, and I live there now!
A funny moment was when a young boy realized that Josh Funk was in the audience and announced that he saw Josh at an author event at his elementary school in Newton. At first, he couldn’t believe Josh Funk was there in the flesh. Josh actually attends quite a few author/illustrator events. I see him all the time.
There were a few more children’s book authors and illustrators in the audience that escaped being in the photograph (that was just for those of us who lingered!). Most notable was Tui T. Sutherland who is another Newton local.
Vicky knocked it out of the park. Not only did she read a chapter of her newest book, but she also had a wonderful craft activity where kids could learn to draw Ava and then decorate the notebook with sparkly jewels (just like Ava Lin!). She had Ava Lin cookies and juice boxes as well. The cookies looked remarkably like her character!
Vicky grew up in Newton but lives in Northern California so it was a treat to have her visit us on the hottest day of the year. Thankfully, Newtonville Books blasted the air conditioning and it was nice and cool inside!
