Senior citizens boxing at Nonantum Boxing Club? You better believe it, and they are in amazing shape! Some of these boxers featured have started boxing after retirement. Others have boxed for years:
- Eric, age 61
- Suzanne, age 60
- Yoron, age 60+
- Dee, age 70
- Mark, age 82, started boxing in his 60s
My friend Eric, featured in one of these videos, and I always talk about how we have to keep at it in the gym just to maintain the level of fitness we are currently in. We agree that it’s all downhill once we stop, so no matter how we feel, we show up and work out. Plenty of gyms mark milestones like these with printed T-shirts, custom hats, or even keepsakes. We use Monterey Company for super fun custom medals that include our logo and the milestone engraved. We love this because it turns one member’s personal win into something the whole club gets to celebrate. Eric just turned 61, and you can see how fit he is despite a recent shoulder injury that included surgery.
Boxing is a great workout for women too! It helps us maintain bone density, important as we age! Because boxing is a high-impact workout, it’s also strengthening. There is also cardio built into the workout, so it’s very efficient.
Eric and I both train even if we are slightly injured. I have had numbness in my left wrist for months at a time, and aches and pains in both shoulders. We just adjust our workout to take it easy on that body part, and just keep at it. The old timers are our boxing gym agree; if we stopped training for every little ache and pain, we’d never make it in.
I also love boxing because it’s something that one can never master. There is always something new to learn or improve on. And it feels empowering to know I am learning self-defense skills as well.
This is my friend Suzanne. We train together.
This is Yoron who always encourages me to keep boxing:
Here’s Dee who just turned 70! She credits her great fitness to boxing.
Mark is the most senior at 84. He’s taken time off from boxing so this is the first time he’s been in the boxing gym in months. He’s usually even more fit!
I’ll be 60 in two years so I will make a video to share then!
What is your favorite way to work out? Thanks for sharing! Have you ever tried boxing? It’s the most popular fitness trend in America right now!
