Our trip to visit an oyster farm in Duxbury, MA turned into Food for the Future. Not all my kids were able to attend that experience so when we were on the Big Island of Hawaii, I made sure to visit the abalone farm tour there.
It wasn’t the same experience as we did take a boat out into the ocean to eat as many abalone as we could open like our oyster tour, but we did get to sample the abalone grilled at the end. It was delicious! We also brought some canned abalone to take home.
Have you ever eaten abalone? What did you think of it? If you haven’t, would you try it? Thanks for sharing!

I have eaten abalone. When I was young, abalone could be found near our home in central coastal California. Now it’s protected and the fines for poaching are $4,000 – $15,000. There was for many years an abalone farm in Cayucos. We went to an amazing dinner there before the pandemic. It has closed but Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is taking it over for their aquaculture program so it will be interesting to see what happens.
Canned abalone does not sound good to me.
Do you know how to cook abalone? Sauté 4 minutes on one side, turn it over and sauté 3 minutes. Don’t overcook it!
