My company, Aquent, set up Earth Day events for our employees and talent in several locations across the United States. The Boston area event was an Earth Day Clean Up at Nahant Beach. At first glance, the beach seemed pretty clean. There weren’t any visible signs of litter, but Lucy, who grew up in Nahant, told us to look for the rope because it breaks down into microplastics.
The rope is used for lobster pots and for tying up boats. The saltwater breaks it down, and it seems to wash up on shore where it gets partially embedded into the sand, with only a tiny bit sticking out. Short pieces of rope are also entangled in the seaweed and kelp that is also washed up on shore.
There were only about a dozen of us, including two children. We started at 9:00 am and finished by noon. At 10:30 am, I felt like I had done enough but a news reporter from Channel 10 showed up and asked to take footage. As we picked up more trash and rope, we all got our second wind and finished the entire beach … 27 bags of trash in all, most of it pieces of rope!
The highlight for our staff is that our CEO, John Chuang, and his wife Lynne were part of the clean-up crew! What a great example he set simply by showing up and working hard. John’s commitment to a healthy Earth goes even further; he’s taking our company carbon neutral by installing solar farms in the Midwest. So far, we, as a company, have reduced our carbon footprint by about 50%. While most of our company works remotely from home, we still have employees who commute into an office, and the power to run the computer and internet is also accounted for.
What a fun event to clean up the beach for Earth Day. It makes me proud to be part of Aquent!
What did you do for Earth Day? Thanks for sharing!
p.s. I’m holding a huge piece of rope that I pulled out of the sand.
