Our oldest, Grasshopper and Sensei, is a student at Rhode Island School of Design, and we always made it a point to visit art museums whenever we traveled, but this was the first time that we traveled with her but went to an art museum without her.
She took her siblings for a day of thrifting with her friends so my husband and I, with time on our hands, decided to visit the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on our own, and boy, was it worth it! First of all, it’s a beautiful space in a nice area. There has been much chatter lately about the homelessness issue in San Francisco and how that is negatively affecting tourism. This was not an issue for us and we walked from the Ferry Plaza for the huge Farmer’s Market to the museum.
I think that this museum makes my top five art museums in the world. I recently went to the Tate Modern in London and was equally impressed. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a must-see in my opinion if you are in SF and have time for an art outing.
Have a look … (and how wonderful to see San Francisco’s own Ruth Asawa’s beautiful wire sculptures on display!). I have her featured in my book list on female artists.
What are your favorite art museums? Thanks for sharing. If you are ever in Boston, I highly recommend the Museum of Fine Art and the Peabody Essex Museum. I don’t love the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art).

I agree that this is a beautiful art museum! Have you been to the two (free!) art museums on Stanford campus? They are well worth a visit if you’re ever in this area again.
