My son did the 6-week Rhode Island School of Design Pre-College program. He thinks that because he registered early for this program, he ended up in the new dorm, the one with AIR CONDITIONING which is very useful during Providence’s humid and sticky summers!
He doesn’t need much by way of dorm room decoration as you can see in his move-in video. In fact, the walls never did get any adornment.
The hardest part for my night owl son is getting up in the morning. He did manage to make it to class every day and on time, something that is harder for him to do in high school.
Two of my son’s friends also did the shorter (1 week and 2 weeks) Brown Pre-College Programs. Thankfully, their move-in day was a different day from RISD’s because College Hill is teeming with cars on those days. He had dinner off-campus with both of his friends — the only times he ate out. I think that speaks to the excellent dorm food at RISD!
He really liked the RISD Pre-College program though he did repeatedly say that it was a lot of work. I think it’s perfect for kids who are thinking of applying to an art school because they get to experience what their first year will be like.
For some, it’s too much art! But that’s a great revelation to have before entering 12 grade. For others like my son, it solidified his desire to attend art school. And the upside … he made a lot of art for his art school application portfolio!
