I wanted to thank everyone again for their support of my book passion project, a response to my middle daughter’s comment in high school that there weren’t any Asian female athletes.
After the Kickstarter campaign ended and I was able to fund my book, I assumed that I would sell books on Amazon by running Amazon ads. Sadly, this strategy did not work. Amazon would not take my money! I would set up my ad tagged to “Asian American children’s books” to run for 30 days at a spend of $1 a day, and Amazon would send me a bill for 4 cents because they simply would not run my ad.
I didn’t realize that using the FREE Amazon ISBN number is coded such that it tells Amazon that this book is independently published (versus traditionally published). Amazon does not seem to want to promote self-published books. But, purchasing a desirable ISBN number means buying ISBN numbers in bulk (which is what publishers do) and that costs hundreds of dollars, so that wasn’t an option for me.
Instead, I donated books to teachers to sell books, hoping my book would get passed around and a reader would want a copy. I did sell books that way but not a lot.
This is why I AM SO EXCITED to let you know that Scholastic purchased reprinting rights to CHANGING THE GAME and they plan to print in June 2023. CHANGING THE GAME will continue to be available on my website, Amazon, Barnes and Noble online, and Google, but it will now also be sold through the Scholastic flyers and in their book fairs.
This is what Scholastic said:
“I’m pleased to say that we are interested in school market paperback reprint rights to Changing the Game: Asian Pacific American Female Athletes.
We are working on a new classroom program entitled Rising Voices: Amplifying AANHPI Narratives (the latest in our line of Rising Voices libraries, which have covered African American and Latino Boys, Girls of Color, and Latino Stories), and we think this title would make a great addition.”
If you happen to see CHANGING THE GAME in your school’s book fair, please email me a photo and I’ll send you a free copy as a thank you!
