We took a tour of the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Maui, Hawaii. Our good friend, Michael Castillo, brother Ricky is the Director of Golf and kindly gave us a tour. When we drove up, I was shocked to see a resemblance to Taliesen that my husband and I have visited in Arizona more than 25 years ago.
The King Kamehameha Golf Club is Maui’s premier private golf club in Maui, Hawaii. The club’s 74,000 sq.ft. clubhouse is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and sits at 750 feet above sea level offering Haleakala, as well as bi-coastal ocean views. The golf club was named to honor the greatest king in the history of the Hawaiian Islands. The unification of the islands into a peaceful and prosperous kingdom has become his legacy, and our inspiration to honor the culture of Hawai’i and foster an awareness of the ‘aina (land) and its malama ‘aina (native resources).
That’s no coincidence. The King Kamehameha Golf Club is based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design of a mansion for Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller. They divorced, and these architecture plans were mothballed until the builders at King Kamehameha Golf Club decided to purchase these and modify them to increase the footprint of their new clubhouse.
All the hallmarks of a great Frank Lloyd Wright design can be seen at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. The building nestles into the mountain, fitting in with its surroundings like an organic outcropping of molded earth. There are absolutely no straight lines making ninety-degree angles; the walls curve gently. Light is the focus of each room, and makes a path from dark to light to beckon the visitor into the room. Custom furniture and light fixtures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright adorn each space.
I did not expect to find a Frank Lloyd Wright treasure in Hawaii! It makes me want to visit more of his houses in Illinois when I am out there next! Thank you to Ricky Castillo for showing us this architectural marvel. Even better, as a member here, this is your clubhouse AND you get to play golf. There is no other Frank Lloyd Wright property where you can do that!
