We took our son to visit Tulane University. He’s not really interested in Tulane but he wanted to visit New Orleans for the food. Who can blame him?
Our first stop was a hole-in-the-wall fried chicken place, Willie Mae’s Scotch House, that won a James Beard Award. They were seriously understaffed but the wait was worth it! I also recommend the butter beans. It was my first time trying them, but I have a feeling this version is one of the best in the south!
My son also wanted a crawfish boil. Mikey Chen of Simply Dumpling recommended Clesi’s but it’s not walking distance from the French Quarter. It was worth the commute!
Our Lyft driver recommended The Ruby Slipper Cafe for breakfast. It was truly the best breakfast of my life!
We ate well during our three days in New Orleans. My YouTube playlist is here. It includes the requisite Cafe du Monde and Oceana Grill.
I have to say that in retrospect, maybe choosing a college for the food scene isn’t such a bad idea! What are your favorite restaurants in New Orleans? Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mia – it’s Eve, the Barefoot Librarian. I am from New Orleans, so I loved this post! The New Orleans food scene has changed quite a bit since Hurricane Katrina. Of course, some long-time names are still on the scene – Commander’s Palace, Galatoire’s, etc. – but there are a lot of new places trying new twists and fusions of New Orleans staples. My brother still lives in New Orleans and is a great cook, so I am usually eating his food. However, I always make sure my visit includes a stop at Cafe Du Monde. There is no place in the world like it!
Thanks for plugging New Orleans as a food destination – the city relies so heavily on tourism.
Would have loved to see you while you were here! My very favorite restaurant in the city right now is Brown Butter. It’s like comfort food but better. Some of the best food I’ve ever eat. A little off the (tourist’s) beaten path, on Carrollton Avenue, but really close to a lot of city. It’s in a small strip mall so it doesn’t look like a lot on the outside, but the food and the atmosphere are both comfortable and eclectic.
