This book celebrates the many different types of dads – from how they look to the jobs they do to the activities they enjoy engaging in with their children. It’s a wonderful tribute to dads! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Hair Love by Matthew Cherry, illustrated by Vashti Harrison
This is an ode to father-daughter love and natural hair. A father tries to style his daughter’s hair to her liking but struggles to get it right. They have fun trying together, and, eventually, meet with success. In fact, the father does such a good job that when her mom comes home, she compliments her daughter’s hair. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Knock Knock: My Dad’s Dream for Me by Daniel Beaty, illustrated by Bryan Collier
A boy’s father wakes him up each morning by knocking on his bedroom door. One day his father doesn’t come though and the son wonders where he is. The boy writes a letter to his (incarcerated) father and his father writes back to him, a letter of love and inspiration, reminding him of their special moments and how his son can still experience them even in his absence. [picture book, ages 3 and up]
Dad Bakes by Katie Yamasaki
Dad wakes early every morning to go to work at the bakery. The best part of his day is when he gets home and spends time with his daughter. They play, read, garden, and, of course, bake. [picture book, ages 6 and up]
Your Mama by NoNieqa Ramos, illustrated by Jacquelie Alcántara
This book is a shout-out to fly, fierce moms. The daughter in this book looks up to her beautiful mama who is strong and smart and does everything with style. Most importantly, the mom loves her daughter, and her daughter loves her; together they are a dream team.[picture book, ages 4 and up]
Saturday by Oge Mora
A young girl and her mother cherish their Saturdays together. They always have a great time, but this Saturday one thing after another goes wrong with all of their fun plans. When the mother becomes upset, her daughter reminds her that what’s most important is spending time together OR being with each other[picture book, ages 4 and up]
A Big Mooncake for Little Star by Grace Lin
Little Star loves the delicious Mooncake that she bakes with her mama. She’s not supposed to eat it but can’t resist. The mother in this story is patient and loving, and Little Star knows that if she eats the mooncake, she’ll be able to bake another with her mom. [picture book, ages 4 and up]

Valerie Bolling is the author of the 2021 SCBWI Crystal Kite award-winning and CT Book Award finalist LET’S DANCE! (March 2020). In 2022 Valerie is happy to welcome TOGETHER WE RIDE (April) and RIDE, ROLL, RUN: TIME FOR FUN! (October). Sequels to these books as well as a Scholastic early reader series, RAINBOW DAYS, are slated for 2023.
A graduate of Tufts University and Columbia University, Teachers College, Valerie has been an educator for almost 30 years. She currently works as an Instructional Coach for Greenwich Public Schools and is on the faculty at Westport Writers’ Workshop. She is also a WNDB mentor and deeply immersed in the kidlit writing community, particularly involved with SCBWI, the 12X12 Picture Book Challenge, and Black Creators HeadQuarters.
