It’s summertime, the best time of the year to travel with your kids. But just because you’re traveling with kids doesn’t mean that you can’t look good while doing it, but in order to travel well, you need to make a plan first.
Planning Your Trip
As you begin planning your trip, a few things to think about before you head out. Deciding where you want to travel, what you want to see and do, and setting a budget are all crucial details to plan.
The first step is planning your vacation and creating an itinerary. The second is dealing with packing. The third is how to budget for your trip and budgeting for the return from your trip. Unfortunately, this area is the one that most people forget about when planning a trip.
Itinerary
Planning your trip includes more than picking a destination and figuring out when and where to stay. Part of traveling with kids is to have a detailed travel itinerary that you can share with loved ones in case something happens either at home or to you while you’re away.
An itinerary is a blueprint of your trip, where you’ll be heading, how you plan to get there, and when you return. Of course, figuring out those components is crucial, but keep your itinerary loose enough that there is wiggle room to explore and discover. In other words, you don’t need to plan minute-by-minute, just the essential information.
For instance, if you’re thinking of staying in Tennessee’s capital, you might consider looking into some Nashville hotels for a comfortable rest. This way, you’re not overly committed, but you have a general idea of where you might stay during your journey.
What about preparing activities? Part of your itinerary should include a list of possible activities to explore. By having a rough outline of the types of activities you may do on your trip, you’ll be better prepared for how to pack and dress accordingly.
What You Should Be Packing
For most people, packing for a trip is the most stressful part. People tend to overpack and still find a way to forget critical items like glasses, electronic chargers, or even money and credit cards! The key is to create a pre-pack checklist, pair it down by 10%, and then pack your bag in order of priority.
The Clothes To Bring
Dressing the part for your vacation is crucial in packing efficiently and looking good while you do it. Summer travel doesn’t mean dressing like a clown. You can dress fashionably if you know how.
For example, if you’re traveling to Asia during the summer, it’s going to be hot and sticky, making loose-fitting clothes a priority. Also, you can look good without too much in the way of accessories. For example, simple hoops can take a casual blouse and skirt to another level.
Just because you’re traveling with kids doesn’t mean you need to slum it. Pack light, loose-fitting clothes that you can interchange to create new, exciting, and fashionable ensembles. These will give you the flexibility to accommodate every aspect of your trip without the burden of taking too many clothes.
Include Some Books
Of course, you want to pack some books. You and the kiddos need some mental stimulation during the trip, especially on long flights or train rides. Select a book or two that matches the theme of your vacation to help stimulate your kid’s curiosity and imagination.
Don’t Forget Toys
Depending on where you’re going and how you plan to travel, choosing a toy or multiple toys is a personal decision. For camping and short road trips, more toys may make more sense. However, for flights and intercontinental trips, minimize the number of toys you pack. Toys are bulky, take up space in your luggage, and add weight that may be costly in baggage fees.
Remember Toiletries and Medications
Toiletries and adequate medications are one of the most forgotten items on a trip. You may want to overpack for this area, especially if you’re traveling overseas. Also, if you’re traveling outside your state, take a copy of any prescriptions, as each state and country has different medication laws.
Take Travel Documents
Have all your important documents, from IDs, passports, and visas to confirmation codes and other travel documents. You should also carry insurance card information and emergency contact cards.
What About Budgeting?
Too many people look at a vacation, plan their trip, and budget on how to make it affordable. What is often overlooked is that while you’re on vacation, you aren’t making any income, bills are still due, and you won’t have any additional money when you return.
Planning your budget for your return is just as crucial in preparing for your trip. There will always be bills and expenses that come about on your trip or may pop up when you return, so creating a little buffer is a good idea.
Having fun with your kids and traveling can be stressful. But by planning ahead, dressing appropriately, and budgeting, you can have the times of your life and not look like a disheveled, thrown-together mess while you’re at it.
