Why Get a Degree in Psychology?

Why Get a Degree in Psychology?

Posted on February 9, 2022January 31, 2024 by Pragmatic Mom

Psychology is one of the most popular subject choices among students today. Psychology is currently fourth when it comes to the most popular majors among college and university students worldwide. In the U.S. over one hundred thousand students each year major in psychology. Psychology offers a lot of opportunities for student personal growth along with a varied range of career options. I have noticed the need for therapists who are Asian Pacific Americans because they bring a cultural understanding to their work that helps them understand AAPI clients. If you are curious about psychology as a major, here are some of the main benefits of studying this topic.

Huge Range of Career Opportunities

Psychology is a subject that can be applied in any career field that involves working with people, so it’s no surprise that it’s a popular option. If you’re not 100% of the career path that you want to take but know that you want to work with people in the future, psychology can be an ideal place to start.

You could find yourself working in a huge range of roles including business, sales, and advertising roles to working directly with mental health patients to provide counseling and advice on a range of issues such as reframing negative thoughts or dealing with anxiety. As you study, you will have the option to tailor your education and focus on one or more of a variety of different specialty areas that fit your interests best. There are countless routes that you can choose to pursue including counseling psychology, clinical psychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, organizational psychology, sports psychology, educational psychology, and many more.

Get a Better Understanding of People

Getting a degree in psychology is an interesting option for many students as it’s a great way to learn more about both yourself and other people. This degree can help you get a better understanding of why people sometimes behave a certain way, for example, and provide you with the tools and resources to get a better understanding of yourself, your feelings, thoughts, emotions, and reactions. With a psychology degree, you will have a deeper understanding of the human mind and this can lead to an ability to take a more empathetic approach to others.

Pursue Your Passions and Interests

Many students who study psychology are particularly passionate about or interested in a particular area of this field. Like them, perhaps you are interested in learning more about why some people commit crimes while others do not or have a special interest in children’s mental health. Even areas that do not seem obviously connected to psychology at first glance, such as aviation or team sports, are in many ways related, and a degree in psychology could be the best first step towards working in a certain career role in these fields. One of the main benefits of getting a psychology qualification is that since there are so many different and diverse specialty areas in this field, there is always going to be the option for students to really focus on the
areas that they are the most interested in.

Make a Difference

A degree in psychology can lead you to many different career options that will allow you to make a real difference in the lives of other people. If you are naturally compassionate, empathetic, and helpful and want to have a positive impact on other people in the work that you do, a degree in psychology might be the best option for you. Many students who study psychology will eventually go on to work directly with clients and patients in roles such as psychologists, counselors, therapists, community services workers, social workers, and more. Along with this, further study along with a psychology degree can help you get into even more careers where you can make a difference such as teaching, nursing, and much more.

Growing Demand for Professionals

There is currently a rising demand for psychology professionals in various different workplace settings including treatment centers, hospitals, social services, schools, businesses, non-profits, and more. Some areas of psychology are experiencing more demand than others. Some of the most in-demand psychology fields right now include clinical psychology, school psychology, and organizational psychology. By 2029, employment rates in the field of psychology are expected to grow by around 3%, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A degree or graduate degree in psychology along with some relevant work experience can help you get noticed in an ever-competitive field.

Enjoy Fun, Interesting, and Rewarding Work

If you find solving practical or theoretical problems rewarding, psychology might be the ideal choice of degree program for you. Since there are so many different career options that you can choose from once you have a qualification in this field, you’re sure to find a role where you can focus on solving various problems on a regular basis. There are various emerging psychology fields such as traffic psychology or engineering psychology that have a large focus on making systems or products safer and more efficient for their users. On the other hand, you may end up in a role where you are able to work directly with people to help them solve problems that are often emotional and complex. Other psychology professionals work in research settings, where you will be spending time studying people and working closely with participants to conduct research and gain a deeper understanding of human behavior and the human mind in a range of situations.

Prepare for Graduate Study

If you have decided that you want to pursue a future career as a psychologist, a bachelor’s of science in psychology can be an ideal degree program to prepare you for your chosen path. To become a psychologist, you will be required to start here before going on to get advanced qualifications. To become a clinical psychologist, for example, you will need to get a doctorate degree in psychology along with licensure and extensive work experience. However, graduate study to become a psychologist is not the only advanced study that a bachelor’s in psychology can prepare you for.

With a bachelor’s degree in psychology, you are well-positioned to earn a master’s degree in a variety of subjects including life sciences, counseling, law, journalism, business, marketing, teaching, social work, and many more.

How to Choose the Right Psychology Degree

The first step to graduating with your psychology degree is to choose the right degree program for you. There are various factors to consider as you make this big decision. With psychology such a popular subject, you can find it on offer at the majority of reputable colleges along with many online-only colleges that offer distance learning psychology programs. Some of the main things to think about before you choose a program include:

  • Learning Style: Whether you want to learn on-campus or online will play a part in the degree program that you choose. The good news is that online learning is becoming more and more commonplace, so if you want a distance learning option, there are more psychology and psychology-related programs to choose from than ever before.
  • Accreditation: It’s important to get a degree that is accredited by a relevant body. This is especially crucial if you have plans to get into a psychology career in the future such as a psychologist or counseling. The American Psychological Association is one of the major accrediting bodies for psychology degree programs in the US.
  • Reputation: Before choosing a degree program, spend some time researching the program and the school where it is offered to find out more about the reputation. Speak to current and past students to find out more about their experience and if they would recommend the program. Ask about the jobs that they are doing right now and if they feel that their psychology degree helped them achieve their career goals or get further to doing so.
  • Future Prospects: If you have a specialist career in psychology in mind, it might be worth considering this when choosing your degree. For example, if you want to become a sports psychologist, a bachelor’s degree in sports psychology rather than general psychology might be a better option for you, allowing you to focus on your chosen area and be better prepared for your future career path.
  • Entry Requirements: Finally, make sure that you meet the entry requirements for any psychology degree that you want to take. Generally, you will need a high school diploma as a minimum. Some programs may require you to have additional psychology-related qualifications or demonstrate that you have earned relevant work experience. If you have alternative qualifications, such as qualifications earned in another country, contact the school early to learn more about your options.

It’s easy to see why psychology is one of the most popular college majors around the world, leading to a vast range of career options with plenty of interesting things to learn.
