Exercise can be fun! In the age of video games and digital worlds, getting kids to feel excited about exercise can be difficult, but it’s not impossible. If you want to get your kids to exercise, here are some tips to consider.
Set An Example
If your kids notice you exercising, and that you are having fun while doing it, it may be easier to get them involved. You could even think about creating a home gym and using it for a fun daily exercise routine. It does not have to be a huge space – you can start with a 35lb barbell and start exploring from there.
When my kids had long-term concussions and were unable to exercise, we found that setting up a badminton net in our yard was a fun way to get everyone involved. My child with a concussion was still able to participate even if he didn’t move around a lot. We played partners badminton with the other person doing more of the leaping and running.
Exercise Together
Exercising together can be fun, whether it’s running through the park under a gorgeous autumnal sky, or taking to the tennis court and having a little friendly competition (which can also be great for child development). It can be very bonding for a family to exercise together.
I signed my family up for 10 sessions of family yoga on Sunday mornings. At first, my children were unhappy but it ended up being really fun. We always went out to breakfast together after our yoga session and we let the kids choose our destination.
Educate Them on the Value of Exercise
Although it’s easy to say, “exercise is good for you,” it’s helpful to explain.
A few key talking points in this area can be:
Improving Strength and Endurance – Stronger, healthier bodies can lead to a longer and more fulfilling life.
Supporting the Mind – Exercise is great for the brain, and looking after the mind can be extremely important for mental health.
More Energy – Exercising your body can result in higher energy levels throughout the day, so for those complaining about always being too tired, perhaps a little workout is in order.
The list goes on, so do not hesitate to seek out advice from medical professionals if you feel like you simply cannot convince your kids to exercise. The yearly pediatrician appointment is great for that kind of discussion.
Incentivize Them
Not a bribe as such, more of a goal to strive for, a reward to earn, and an objective to achieve – offering an incentive can be a good way to motivate your kids to exercise. Whether this is a pizza party at the end of the week or some more screen time, giving them a reward to aim for might be the best way to go.
Team Sports
Getting them involved in a game like soccer or baseball might help your kids not only get enough exercise, but make new friends and form lasting relationships. The team sports that my kids enjoyed helped them to meet kids outside of our town and then set them up to participate in sports when they started high school, which helped with the transition.
Exercise is the gift that keeps on giving. By getting your kids active as children, you set them up for a healthy lifestyle that they will enjoy their entire lives. Sports and exercise are great for mental health, managing stress, meeting people, and learning to work towards goals. I think there is a sport for everyone (and a martial art as well!)!
