Writing an essay is an essential skill that college students have to cultivate to succeed academically. Find out what you should do to compose high-quality papers.
I Can’t Write Essays. What Should I Do?
College essays are academic papers that are used to develop an argument or idea by means of analysis, solid evidence, and interpretation. There are many types of college essays out there. Both the length and content of an essay depend on the discipline, academic level, course requirements, and complexity level of the project. But the reality is that most essays that students are assigned to complete are argumentative: you have to persuade your readers of this or that perspective and position on a particular topic.
The process of writing an essay of any type includes three key stages:
- Preparation. You choose the topic, perform in-depth research, and build an outline.
- Writing. Provide your argument in the introductory paragraph, support it with strong evidence in the body section, and end it up with a logical conclusion.
- Revision. Edit your assignment, its structure, spelling, format, grammar, and so on.
In this article, we will show you how to write a college essay that is free from errors, what to include in each section of it, and review it like a pro.
Choose the Topics You’re Interested in
When you start writing a paper for college, it is important to choose the topic that works best for you. When picking the topic to research, ensure it supports the type of essay that you are required to craft. If a student writes an essay that is a general overview, feel free to select a general topic. At the same time, if you have to provide specific analysis, it is important to give preferences to a specific thing to discuss in your work.
For instance, if you’re required to write an overview, the topic “France” would be suitable. Nonetheless, if the key goal of your paper is to produce a certain analysis, the topic “France” would be too general. It is important to narrow your topic down to the line “French Politics during the Renaissance Era” or “France as the Country with the World’s Sixth-Most Powerful Military.”
When students have an opportunity to select essay topics themselves, then the first step to take is defining the paper’s purpose. Are you required to persuade? Or, perhaps, you have to educate your readers or explain something? The topic you decide to work on must support the paper’s purpose.
Get Ready for the Process of Writing
Before you dive into the process of writing, it is important to make sure you know what you’re going to talk about and how. There are some key steps to take to get ready for the main work:
- Ensure you understand the task. What is the key goal of the project? What are your timeframes? How many words are you required to include in the assignment? Is there anything that you would like to make clear with your instructors?
- Know your topic. If you have an opportunity to choose your own topic but don’t know what way to go, ask professional writers for help online. They will find out what fields you’re most interested in and provide you with a list of the hottest topics. Besides, if at any point, you find yourself stuck in the writing process, feel free to approach them with your “write my essays online for me please” request and get immediate assistance. There are many websites where you can find a qualified writer to produce cheap papers that are free from plagiarism.
- Do in-depth research. Check each primary and secondary source, such as a manual, book, or website, and take notes to figure out your position and viewpoint on the chosen topic. Your sources will serve as a great tool to come up with solid evidence to back up your points.
- Write your thesis. This is the core argument or point that you want to make in your paper. A strong thesis is a must if you want your essay to be focused – you will be referring back to it a lot in the process of writing.
- Outline your essay. Create a solid and logical structure for your work. If you do so, it will be easier for you to cope with the writing part and stay on track as you work on your project.
When a student knows what exactly s/he wants to talk about in the essay, in what order, and how s/he is going to support each argument, it’s time to start writing.
Writing the Intro
In an introductory paragraph, you’re required to set the tone for your project. Make sure it hooks your reader’s attention and informs them what you’re going to talk about. The intro is usually 10-20% of your essay. The very first sentence of the introductory paragraph should make your target readers want to read more. Use a surprising question, an intriguing fact, or some stats that are relevant to your topic. What is more, it is important to provide background to the chosen topic to ensure your target readers understand the main argument of the essay. Finally, use your introduction to present your thesis statement. This is the core argument that will make in your project. It includes your exact position on the chosen topic.
Creating the Main Body
The main body of the essay is the section where the author makes arguments in order to support the thesis. It is important to include solid evidence and develop all of your ideas. The main aim here is to present, analyze, comprehend, and interpret the information that you found during the research stage.
Concluding Your Essay
The conclusion is the last part of the project. Make sure your final paragraph doesn’t take up more than 15% of the whole work. A solid conclusion for a college essay must:
- Be relevant to your thesis statement;
- Link all the key points of the essay;
- Show why your argument is important.
A strong concluding part of the essay should be ended with a sentence that your target readers won’t forget after the last line. Use an impactful or memorable sentence to leave them with a great final impression.
When you work on a concluding paragraph of the essay, you have to make it as strong as possible. To reach the goal, ensure to avoid the following things:
- Providing new evidence or arguments;
- Using phrases such as “To conclude…” or “To sum up…”
- Undermining the arguments that you include (saying things like “This is just one point of view among loads of others”)
Knowing how to compose top-notch college papers is a crucial part of the academic process. As you progress through your educational journey, you will be assigned to write essays in many different disciplines. If you make sure to use the tips and tricks given above, you will soon develop the ability to compose compelling and clear essays.
