Personalizing your home is a, well, personal endeavor. There are plenty of interesting ways that you can consider as possibilities to make your home your own without spending a lot of money. I’ve been inspired by watching Queer Eye with such amazing transformations of the homes.
Hang Some Pictures
A wonderful way to make your house feel more homely is to hang artwork. Heck, cover the walls in pictures if you want to; it is your home after all. It’s especially nice if the artwork is meaningful to you in some way. In my case, all these paintings and drawings are by members of my family or someone that I know.
Paint the Walls as a Family
If you are planning on painting the walls of your home, then you might want to consider painting the walls as a family. Even better, consider personalizing the walls with artwork if you have an artistic bent. My husband doesn’t consider himself to be artistic, but he painted the helicopter that Maisy is riding in and the parachute. We used stickers for Maisy. Even if you don’t feel up to painting a mural on your walls, just painting the walls a single color together will make for great memories.
Get Some Fancy Furniture
One way to spice up a room is to find a centerpiece that is the focal point of the room. You never know, the antique chandeliers for sale online might be the perfect way to tie your living room together, or maybe a piano is a perfect accessory to accent your living room. Whatever it might be, investing in some fancy furniture can give a little more character to your home.
Set Up a Game Room
A game room is a wonderful place for you, your family, and your friends to all enjoy yourselves. Whether you are playing tabletop games together or gathering around the latest console to have a little local multiplayer action, having a room dedicated to simply relaxing and enjoying a calm gaming experience is a wonderful thing. We use our basement for an all-purpose gymnasium featuring a golf hitting net, a putting green, a pull-up bar that gets used as a basketball hoop, and an area of boxing. We are considering adding a ping pong table as well.
Display Some Figures
Another brilliant way to ensure that your house really feels like a home is to put in shelves and cabinets and the like that are dedicated to the display of small figures and other little bric-a-brac that you’ve probably collected over the years. I like to break up the book displays by using Buddha heads that I’ve collected as bookends. My prize possession is this carved wooden Buddha that I found in a flea market. It makes me feel calm. Small decorative elements help to personalize your space.
Establish a Memory Wall
Finally, if you are fond of keeping little tokens of memorable events, then you might enjoy the idea of setting up a memory wall. With a little cork board placed onto a wall, you can make the perfect place to pin up those lovely little memories you are holding onto and make sure that you can see them often. After all, what is the point in keeping those little memories if you tuck them away and never see them?
My husband used cork board to cover the stairwell to the basement of our old house. He then covered the walls with photos. Everyone loved walking down the stairs because you’d always notice a different photo that would trigger a warm memory.
With the pandemic lockdown, we were all forced to stay at home. It was the perfect time to purge unwanted stuff and re-examine our living space. If it doesn’t feel quite right, try a few of these ideas until you have the perfect nesting space!
