Roto and Roy: Helicopter Heroes by Sherri Duskey Rinker, illustrated by Don Tate
This picture book reminds me of the animated movie series, Cars. Roto and Roy are on the move when a forest fire burns out of control. This is very dangerous work but our superheroes are on the job! Rollicking rhymes make this a fun read-aloud and Don Tate’s illustrations use a graphic novel format to convey the high-tension action! Fans of Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site will be thrilled about this new series! [picture book, ages, 4 and up]

When I was a kid, my parents bought me a copy of Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. I loved poring over all the illustrations, pointing at all the funny cars and trucks and their drivers. My favorite was the doughnut car. Fast forward to the present time, and now my own kids enjoy picking out their favorite vehicles and seeing if they can spot Goldbug in each scene.
For all the transportation fans out there who are clamoring for more, I put together a list of fun new picture books that channel that Richard Scarry vibe to add to the rotation. These books feature interesting vehicles and drivers, busy streets, calamitous traffic scenes, and recurring characters to seek on each page. Animals Go Vroom looks so cute. My son went thru a stage where we read Where Do Diggers Sleep At Night at least 5 times a day so that is probably our fav transportation book.
Oh we love that book too! We have the board book version, and that has withstood repeated readings with both my kids.
Our copy of that book was in tatters by the time my sons went to elementary school. I’m pretty sure they had it memorized 🚗
