Do you want to meet my kids?
My oldest will be a sophomore at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where she is majoring in Industrial Design. She recently won the BlueGreen innovation challenge with her team which she plans to use as a launchpad for her next start-up.
My middle child will be a freshman at Northwestern University where she will be studying Mathematical Modeling in the Social Sciences. She and her sister started indigo clothing co. while in high school. She was a Nordic Skiier and helped her team take the Mass Bay East title.
My youngest will be a junior in high school. He likes art, STEM, and boxing. This is his project for history class depicting the Hong Kong Democracy Movement:
Let’s play a game of Meet My Kids!
In these scenarios, I’ll tell you who I’d pick.
If I needed someone to build a fire without the use of matches, lighting fluid, or a lighter, I’d pick …
my middle daughter. She is a beast at building a fire, a skill acquired from her YMCA sleepaway camp.
If I needed someone to pull an all-nighter with, I’d pick …
my son. That’s an easy one. He is a night owl and also requires the least amount of sleep.
If I needed someone to help me shop for a bathing suit (a dreaded activity), I’d pick …
my oldest daughter. She has always had the knack for fashion styling at an early age in terms of finding what will look good on your body type.
If I needed someone to go on a foodie adventure, I’d pick …
my middle daughter because she would also drive us. All three of my kids are foodies, but she’s the most adventurous. Of course, she would have to approve the foodie destination before going.
If I needed someone to play golf with, I’d pick …
actually, my first choice is my husband. He’s will provide caddying services by helping with club selection, reading greens, and lining up drives.
My second choice is my son. My third choice is my middle daughter. My oldest daughter refuses to play golf.
If I needed someone to read a picture book manuscript, I’d pick …
my middle daughter. She’s the one who convinced me to try to get Sumo Joe published. She’s a picky reader which is very helpful in manuscript reviews and she’s also the only child that I have willing to read my children’s book manuscripts.
If I need someone for an art critique on my watercolor paintings or drawings, I’d pick …
either my oldest daughter who will also point me to more resources and give me advice on how to improve or …
my son who will laugh gently and give me praise in a sandwich such as “that’s really good mom, but your lines are slightly off.”
If I need someone to drive me somewhere, I’d pick …
the only choice is my middle daughter. She drives fast and with great confidence and she’d rather drive than be the passenger. My son doesn’t have his driver’s license yet, and my oldest does not love driving.
If I needed someone to design a logo, I’d pick …
my oldest daughter, but I’d have to request it as a birthday or mother’s day present. She’s always so busy that it’s hard to get her to carve out time to create it. She created this logo for me based on my Japanese family crest.
If I needed someone to help me weed the yard, I’d pick…
my middle daughter who actually enjoys weeding. She tackled the lawn last year which was full of weeds. I gave up on the lawn years ago and stick to the flower beds. My other two kids have no interest in weeding but I can get my son to help harvest the vegetables. My oldest likes my herb garden.
If I needed someone to bake a fancy dessert, I’d pick …
my son. He follows recipes like a scientist. He makes a mean molten chocolate cake and his chocolate creme brulee is to die for. He even tried to make his own puff pastry from scratch! He made this when he was 12 years old:
If I needed someone to make a charcuterie platter, I’d pick …
my middle daughter. She’s inspired by TikTok videos and creates a beautiful platter!
If I needed someone to cook me a meal, I’d pick …
my oldest daughter who has been living in a house during Covid lockdown with six college roommates. They cook dinner every night and now she’s quite competent cooking all different kinds of ethnic food from Moroccan tagines to Korean food.
If I needed someone for a boxing training partner, I’d pick…
my middle daughter who trained for Golden Gloves. My son is also a boxer but he thinks it’s weird to train with me. My oldest tried boxing but she prefers kickboxing.
