You may have heard this from every parent to enjoy the little moments with your little ones because time flies. The adage is “The days are long but the years are short.” One day they are crawling and toddling around, and then it seems like they are off to school, college, and then life. I like to capture their childhood moments in photographs and videos, even if my kids do not appreciate it at this time! One day, they will cherish these moments. By documenting and journaling, your kids, too, can look back at their past memories and reminisce about their childhood.
Recording memories of your child before conception, throughout pregnancy, and after birth can be a fun thing to do, provided that you set aside time and find methods that work for you. Here are some clever, crafty, and modern ways to document little things about your little one.
Pictures and Videos
a. Cell Phones and Camera
Pictures are probably the easiest way to create lasting memories of your kids. But you can amp up the ante with some creative ways of preserving those memories. Technology has come a long way since the 1990s and made photography easier with the advancement of mobile phones. You can take multiple pictures on your phone and save them online on cloud storage or make a wallpaper. Or have an Instagram account dedicated to the little one where you can upload countless pictures of him or her without losing any data. You can print photos and save them in an album or journal too. b. Video Camera
As easy and user-friendly as cell phone cameras are, a digital camera or video recorder can have some advantages in terms of the quality of your photos and videos. Digital cameras may have lenses and lighting options that are not available on your cell phone camera. Create a YouTube channel to store your videos. It’s an easy way to access videos. I know that I have a box of videos on several formats of tape that now need to be converted to digital. I’m not sure if my kids will be able to access old formats of video so my YouTube channel is my repository of their childhood.
c. Hire a Photographer
Most of the time, you are probably the one recording memories using your phone, camera, or video recorder. You can also consider hiring a professional photographer to mark those special occasions for your kids or for a family portrait. Many lovely childhood and family photos come out of a professional photography studio. You can also hire a photographer to come to your home or a favorite location.
Journaling and Voice Recording
a. Journaling
A baby journal gives you the freedom to write down thoughts and feelings during a certain time in your child’s life. You can even begin before or during pregnancy and look back at those moments as you get older. Post-pregnancy you can write about the first visit by grandpa and grandma, first time home, and even major and minor milestones in your baby’s life –– first tooth, first walk, first day at preschool, first hike or camping, etc. Your journal gives you the freedom to write however and whenever. If you include images, you can note down details about things that happened during and before that specific photo.
b. Voice Recorder
With the help of a voice recorder, you can easily start blogging moments or thoughts that are helpful for your baby journals so you won’t forget them later. You can get each child a recording and have them record something they did or just let them talk a couple of times a week or month. We made a keepsake book for Father’s Day where each of my kids recorded messages in a special book.
Keepsakes
There are a number of keepsakes you might want to hold on to. From albums or scrapbooks, these are treasured memories. You can include the first outfit home from the hospital, a snip of hair from the first haircut, etc. You can create some memorable keepsakes with your kid’s footprints and handprints. There are few things cuter than little baby hands and feet. And the memory of their sweetness should be preserved. With the help of digital photography, you can turn your favorite photos into phone cases, mugs, pillows, blankets, and various other products.
Record Firsts and Milestones
Having a list of firsts and milestones is a great way of recording memories. It is fun to recollect when your kid did this and that, but as time passes by details can get a bit blurry. Making a list on your fridge, books, or phone, somewhere that is easily accessible, will be such a treasure to your child and you in the future. Be sure to take pictures, record video, or use your voice recorder to help you remember anything else from the moment.
Treasure or Memory Box
A treasure box is a great gift that you can give your kid once they are grown up. You can fill it with all sorts of memories and keepsakes throughout your child’s life. Your treasure box can include a favorite blanket, an outfit, a memory book, albums, toys, soft toys, a first tooth, and so much more. You can also save some achievements and rewards your child won in school or college.

Recording childhood memories for your kids is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. These recorded memories and keepsakes will be something they cherish long into adulthood and enjoy sharing with their children even as they begin recording memories for their own families long into the future. And you’ll be equally grateful to have this wonderfully recorded history to look at and enjoy the memories it brings.
