Combine loose ink sketching with watercolor to create beautiful buildings that leap off the page.
In this course, Alex will show you his approach to capturing the depth and feeling of a place using watercolor and ink and translating that onto your page, because it’s one thing to depict a scene accurately and another entirely to portray the character and mood of a place. Learn Alex’s process and infuse your paintings with new life. Domestika Course taught by storyboard artist, Alex Hillkurtz
I am working on my drawing and painting skills specifically the human figure, portrait drawing and painting, and architecture drawing. I happened upon an ad on YouTube for Domestika. The architectural drawing style was vibrant and loose. I wanted to learn how to draw and paint like that.
Architecture Sketching with Watercolor and Ink Course with Alex Hillkurtz
The class, Architecture Sketching with Watercolor and Ink Course, taught by storyboard artist Alex Hillkurtz, was just $10. It’s a series of videos with exercises and a forum to share your work.
Did I mention that the class was just $10?!! I watched the videos on my phone while lying in bed. The first time through, I just watched all the videos over a few days.
My Work for Architecture Sketching with Watercolor and Ink Course with Alex Hillkurtz
Then, I watched the videos again to do the exercises and create the final project. It took my three attempts in order to end up with a painting that actually applied some of what Alex taught me. I think my architectural rendering would improve with one or two more attempts, but I am going to move on.
This is my third attempt at the final project. This is the building where Childe Hassam lived in the South End, Boston.
I can also apply his watercolor and ink technique to landscape paintings, and I am excited to try that next.
If you want to follow along with me as I complete this class, I have an overview of all my work here:
I also have videos for each particular assignment.
Exercise 1: Creating Washes
Exercise 2: Color Mixing
Exercise 3: Thumbnail Sketch
Final Project Attempt 1: Pen and Ink Sketch
Final Project Attempt 1: First Wash
Final Project: Attempt 3
