This is my second visit to NYU (New York University). For my oldest, we did a self-tour of the Tisch School of the Arts last year. I’m glad that my daughter and I sat in the formal school visit which started with an extensive video that went all over the different and copious options of applying to NYC.
NYU feels more complicated than it is. This is because there are multiple campuses and schools. In addition, there are similarities of buildings and schools as well. There’s also the study away aspect which some of the schools require, and kids can find themselves studying abroad their first day of school as freshmen.
But that’s exactly the feel of the school. Situated in Mid-Town, NYU is a hub of productive and happy activity. There’s a definite buzz to the school that resembles high octane caffeine. This is a university that also has offerings for just about any kind of student, with measures in place to make schools within schools so as not to be overwhelming. Creating a written project for NYU, many paper writing websites focusing attention that this university is the best springboard for the comprehensive development of the student.
Kids who come from high schools with graduating classes in excess of 500 students will feel right at home in this bustling environment. This is definitely the school for anyone from a small hometown who wants to experience a city. After all, New York City is just about as citified as you can get.
My overall impression is that NYU is large but supports students so that they thrive. They provide structures to make the school smaller. I don’t know any students from our high school who don’t love it here. This is college experience that makes students leave more independent, worldly, and ready for the real world.
NYU College Visit
My takeaways:
— This is a college for kids who like to travel. More than 50% of the students do study away. Some schools require study away that get assigned freshman year so read the fine print.
— You have to apply to a school within NYU but there are programs that cross different schools. You can also create your own program.
— There is an entrepreneur lab that is available to all NYU students, not just those in the business program.
— The school feels overwhelming when you walk around the campus but it’s split up via the different college programs and does a nice job of making the college feel smaller and more intimate.
— NYU students take advantage of internship programs and their close proximity to corporations. This is a huge plus for the school.
— The center of campus life is Washington Square Park which exemplifies how integrated this university is with NYC.
— This college feels strong across all academic areas including science/biotech research.
p.s. Boba Guys, my kids’ favorite boba shop in the world, has a new location right in the center of NYU. With “life-changing” boba, it’s possibly another good reason to choose NYU!

I can’t even fathom a school with an excess of 500 in a graduating class; most school around here have about 100 (if they’re lucky!). Looks like a pretty neat college though.
Loved reading your thoughts on NYU, Mia – my daughter’s Alma Mater. She graduated from Tisch School of the Arts, in Musical Theatre, and that’s her profession today. I smiled when I read your words, “There’s a definite buzz to the school that resembles high octane caffeine.” Oh, I remember it well. My daughter visited a friend attending Sarah Lawrence and another attending NYU Tisch. The difference in the school and her friends was astounding. The NYU friend came rushing out of a building to quickly greet us, hailed a cab, and shouted to us, “Let’s Go!” They both have been going ever since. Ha.
