I met Lisa Rogers years ago at an author event where she interviewed Jerry Spinelli and Clare Vanderpool. That was in 2013, and now, in 2019, her first picture book is out! Her author’s journey has been a meteoric one, marked by winning a book manuscript competition and starred reviews. She’s also part of my New in ’19 debut picture book group! It’s been a pleasure to watch her rise!
16 Words: William Carlos Williams & “The Red Wheelbarrow” by Lisa Rogers, illustrated by Chuck Groenink
A tender look at poet William Carlos Williams, a doctor by day and a poet whenever he could squeeze it in, and the inspiration behind his most famous poem, “The Red Wheelbarrow.” Not only is this a mentor text for kids on writing poetry from their everyday life, but it’s also a testament to his humanity and compassion as an everyday hero as a doctor who served his community. This beautiful book is on my list for Caldedott 2020! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
