The SAHM's Guide to Returning to Work

For Stay-at-Home Moms Only: The Complete Guide to Returning to Work

Posted on October 22, 2019April 10, 2024 by Pragmatic Mom

Are you a stay-at-home mom that wants to go back to work? I’d love to help. Take a look at the complete guide to returning to work!

As a responsible and loving mother, your children are your first priority. At the same time, you deserve to lead a fulfilling and profitable career if you want.

Perhaps you’ve spent several years as a stay-at-home mom. Now, though, you’re interested in returning to work. After all, many modern mothers balance professional and family life these days.

If that’s the case, you’re in luck. The good news is that you’ve come to the right place. Detailed below is everything you need to know about returning to work.

It’s true that more Millennials are becoming stay-at-home mothers. If you don’t want to be a part of that trend, though, you don’t have to.

Keep reading to prepare yourself and your family for your return to the workforce. You deserve to take advantage of your professional skills and find meaning in your labor just like everyone else.

Start by Evaluating Your Monthly Budget

The first thing for you to consider is your financial situation. When you’re ready to go back to work, after all, you’re going to get some added income every month. For that reason, it’s in your best interest to really take a look at what extra income can do for you versus the cost of childcare that you will now need.

Of course, it’s possible that you’re going back to work because you need more income. That’s why you should take the time to evaluate what kind of additional finances you will need. Then, you can determine what sort of career path makes the most sense for you and your family.

Have Plenty of Discussions with Your Family

Speaking of your family, don’t forget to keep them in the loop regarding your decision to start working again. This is going to be quite a transition for everyone in the household. You do A LOT!

Don’t be concerned if the adjustment period is challenging for everyone. With time and patience, you’ll be able to figure out this new dynamic with ease. Everyone will have to step it up a little but it will work.

Consider the following statistics reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. It indicates that as recently as the year 2012, 29% of mothers throughout the country stayed at home.

In other words, you’re not alone in putting your career on hold to be a parent. Still, there’s no need for you to sacrifice your professional life forever.

One great idea is to make a plan to maintain quality family time. That way, no one will feel as though they’re getting left behind when you head back to work. Plan a monthly or even weekly time for everyone to spend time together, for example.

At the same time, it’s important that you prepare yourself for how this is going to affect your energy levels. Whereas in the past, you’ve focused entirely on the home and family, you’ll have new responsibilities now. If you aren’t as up for doing the same level of household chores, don’t feel guilty.

Instead, work with your family so they can help you with those chores. Once you’re ready to enter the workforce again, your family should be understanding and supportive.

You’re Going to Need to Market Yourself as a Professional

The idea of going back to work after being a stay-at-home mom is one thing. Succeeding in landing your ideal job is another thing altogether.

Many employers may have a hard time with your gap in employment, though they can’t discriminate based upon that. Still, you’re going to have to be creative about overcoming that lack of work experience. Don’t discount the volunteer work that you have done at your kids’ schools or in the community.

One great way to do so is to focus on a strategic marketing campaign for yourself. This goes beyond designing a top-quality résumé, by the way. These days, social media profiles are just as important when it comes to looking for a job.

That’s why it’s a good idea for you to take a long look at your social media profiles. Is all of your content appropriate for a workplace environment? If not, it might be wise for you to set your profile to private so that potential employers won’t judge your photos of that trip you took to the Bahamas last year.

In addition, if you don’t have one already, consider making a LinkedIn profile for yourself. LinkedIn is a great way to network with potential employers in your area.

If Needed, Consider Investing in Training or Certification

Perhaps, though, you simply don’t have enough qualifications or work experience to get the job that you want after being a stay-at-home mom. Perhaps your interests are now different from the work that you did prior to having children. If that’s the case, don’t worry.

Take the time to think about what industries might suit you. Perhaps there are some certifications you could consider pursuing.

For instance, since you have experience working with kids, you might think about getting certified to be a teacher’s aide. That way, you don’t have to go back to school for a full four years at college to qualify.

Be Realistic About Starting at an Entry-Level Position

No matter what industry you want to join again, it’s important to have realistic expectations. After so long away from work, chances are that you’re only going to qualify for entry-level positions. Don’t worry, though – with enough time and dedication, you can move your way up the corporate ladder in no time.

Think About What You’ll Do with Your Pets When You’re Working Again

Going to work again is an exciting time for you, it’s true. You get to explore your professional skills again and find meaning in your life outside of motherhood.

Before you start working full-time right off the bat, though, remember your pets. If you’ve been a stay-at-home mom for a few years now, your pets have gotten used to seeing you all of the time.

For that reason, it might be worthwhile to consider pet care services while you’re first back at work again. That way, they’ll have an easier time adjusting to the lack of seeing you so often.

Perhaps you hire a dog sitter. Maybe you just drop them off at a pet care facility throughout the day. Either way, it’s a good idea to leave them with some treats or toys to keep them busy while you’re gone.

Consider investing in products like those that Innovet provides. These natural products are sure to keep your furry friend happy and healthy for many years to come.

That way, you won’t have to sacrifice his or her quality of life when going back to work.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Advice from Friends and Family

Going back to work after staying home for years presents a variety of challenges. That’s why it can be so comforting to have a solid support group around you.

In fact, many of your friends and family members might have gone through this transition in the past. If you know of anyone who has been a stay-at-home mom before returning to work, take her out to coffee.

Doing so will give you a chance to express any initial concerns you may have, for one thing. Plus, that experienced mother should be able to give you plenty of advice regarding the adjustment. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

You Might Have to Arrange for Childcare Services

In addition to hiring pet care services, you might need additional help with your children. After all, for years now, you’ve been the one to watch them all the time.

If you’re working past when school lets out, for instance, you might need to find someone to watch your kids during that time. This is true, in particular, if your spouse doesn’t have extra time to watch them either.

Some mothers choose to hire a nanny or babysitter in these situations. That way, their children are never left unattended for long periods of time.

Perhaps, though, you might consider after-school programs. If this is offered at your children’s school, it’s worth looking into.

Don’t Sacrifice Your Quality of Life After Returning to Work

Perhaps you’re prepared to go back to the workforce soon? As a stay-at-home mom for so many years, it can be challenging to consider returning to work, but there are also many benefits such as making your kids more independent.

While there will be a period of adjustment, realize that going back to work can morph and change over time. Perhaps your new job will allow you to work partially or completely from home. Perhaps a part-time, seasonal job might be a way to dip a toe into the water.

The career journey is just that. Embark when you are ready and realize that you can say no to opportunities that don’t work for you. In addition, the starting position that you take may change as you work at that company.

If you are ready to return to work, there is something out there for you. You just need to search to find it! And be sure to network with all your mom friends. They know how terrific you are and they will help you find that perfect job! Be sure to chronicle your journey as a personal memoir to your children about this journey. I like the Letters to My Baby, Letters to My Son, and Letters to My Daughter keepsake books.
