How to Deal with a Car Accident as a Parent

How to Deal with a Car Accident as a Parent

Posted on July 26, 2019July 9, 2024 by Pragmatic Mom

Getting into a car accident is never pleasant, but it’s even worse when you have children. Now not only are you concerned with your child’s well-being, but you have to handle all the stuff that comes with a car accident while also taking care of your children. When this happens, it can all become a little overwhelming, and many people are unsure of what to do. If you want to make sure you’re prepared for this situation in case it ever happens, here’s what you need to know.

Make Sure Your Kids Are Okay

Your first priority right after the accident occurs is to make sure your kids are okay. They may be a little shocked emotionally, but for right now you’re concerned about their physical health. Did they sustain any cuts or bruises? Did they hit their head? Were they wearing a seatbelt correctly at the time of the accident? Check on your kids to ensure everything is oaky physically. If you are unsure even a little bit, or if it was a serious accident, take your kid to a doctor just to be safe.

However, if it was only a minor collision, and your child seems physically okay, you can move onto the other steps.

Call for Assistance

The next thing you may want to do is call for some help. Particularly if you have young children in the car who are shaken up, you may want to call a friend or family member to come help you. This person can then either look after your kid while you worry about your car and the other driver, or they can deal with these things while you comfort your children. Many people need some help after a car accident – namely, for a ride home – but this is especially true when there are kids involved. So as soon as you know your kids are okay, call someone nearby so they can get there as soon as possible.

Go Through Standard Car Accident Steps

Now that you have some help with your kids, you can move onto the things you need to do in every car accident. This includes:

  • Swapping information with the other driver
  • Taking pictures of the accident
  • Filing a police report
  • Calling a tow truck, if necessary

It’s important that you do each of these things after an accident. You don’t want to find out later that your insurance is giving you a hard time, or that the other driver is blaming you for the accident, even though it was clearly their fault. Documenting everything during the accident will help protect you later, so be sure to get plenty of evidence and information.

Talk to a Lawyer if Necessary

If there are any issues following the accident, you’ll want to speak to a lawyer. An accident injury lawyer, like The Barnes Firm, can help you get the money you deserve after an accident and protect you from any lawsuits. It’s unfortunate that going through the accident is sometimes not the worst part of the whole ordeal, but that’s where a good lawyer comes in. Take some time to find a good lawyer in your area, then discuss your case with them.

For instance, if the accident occurred in Columbus, hiring a Columbus car accident lawyer who understands the local laws and regulations can be crucial. Lawyers who specialize in handling cases within your jurisdiction are able to make a significant difference in your case’s outcome. Unlike insurance companies, whose primary aim may be to minimize payouts, lawyers prioritize your best interests and work diligently to maximize your compensation. They provide personalized legal advice, negotiate with insurance companies on your behalf, and advocate for your rights in court if necessary, ensuring you receive the full extent of the compensation you deserve. When searching for legal assistance, using a personal injury lawyer directory can help you find the right expert to handle your case effectively, providing you with a list of qualified professionals in your area.

Talk to Your Kids

Finally, after all is said and done, you’ll want to talk to your kids. They may be a little shaken up or shocked after the accident. Let them know that everything is okay and that it is still safe to ride in the car. If they are having a particularly rough time, consider setting up an appointment for them to meet with a professional counselor.

You should also use this opportunity to teach your kids a lesson. Show them the dangers of driving, and how important it is to take it seriously. If you made a mistake that led to the accident, use this to show your kids what not to do. And, if you were injured, show them your resiliency and how an injury won’t slow you down. Car accidents aren’t fun, but if you can find a teachable moment from them, then at least there’s a silver lining.

Hopefully this guide will help you should you ever find yourself in a car accident with your kids in the car. It’s a tough experience, but it becomes more manageable if you know what to do when the moment arrives. Keep your head about you, remember what you read, and you should be able to get you and your kids through this tough time.
