Disney Book Group is partnering with me for a giveaway!
My son and I are huge fans of Rick Riordan but even though he cranks out three or four books out a year, it’s not fast enough for us! It makes us happy that he’s created Rick Riordan Presents, an imprint through Disney Publishing that his editor runs. They are carefully selected diverse authors with similar mythology-meets-modern-day plotlines similar to Percy Jackson, but in this way, Rick Riordan can expand the landscape of mythology and increase the #OwnVoices with his huge social media presence.
The first series of Rick Riordan Presents was the Indian mythology series Aru Shah and the End of Time. We read it with trepidation because Rick Riordan’s combination of pacing, mythology and, most of all, humor, is hard to replicate. While we didn’t like Aru Shah as a character quite as much as the Riordan gang, we enthusiastically await the second installment.
Now, the second series is out and it’s about Maya mythology! We are really excited for this one! AND, we are giving away a 3 book Rick Riordan Sampler! To enter, please use the Rafflecopter at the bottom.
A Storm Runner Novel, Book 1 by J.C. Cervantes
How can one boy with a limp stop the Maya god of death, disaster, and darkness from destroying the world?
Zane has always enjoyed exploring the dormant volcano near his home in New Mexico, even though hiking it is challenging. He’d much rather hang out there with his dog, Rosie, than go to middle school, where kids call him Sir Limps a Lot, McGimpster, or Uno – for his one good leg.
What Zane doesn’t know is that the volcano is a gateway to another world and he is at the center of a powerful prophecy. A new girl at school, Brooks, informs him that he’s destined to release an evil god from the ancient Maya relic he is imprisoned in–unless she can find and remove it first. Together they return to the volcano, where all kinds of crazy happens. Brooks turns into a hawk, a demon attacks them in a cave, and Rosie gives her all while trying to protect Zane. When Zane decides to save his dog no matter the cost, he is thrust into an adventure full of surprising discoveries, dangerous secrets, and an all-out war between the gods, one of whom happens to be his father.
To survive, Zane will have to become the Storm Runner. But how can he run when he can’t even walk well without a cane? [chapter book, ages 10 and up] In stores September 18, 2018

C. Cervantes is the author of Tortilla Sun, which was called “a beautiful and engaging debut” by Kirkus, an “imaginative, yet grounded novel” by Publishers Weekly, and “lean and lightly spiced with evocative metaphor” by School Library Journal. BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I like:
Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods
Daulaire’s Book of Greek Myths (and Norse Myths)
Usborne Books on Mythology
Norse Mythology by Kevin Crossley-Holland
I loved the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series, the Magnus Chase series, and The Trials of Apollo series. Thank you for bringing mythology back to kids. I couldn’t keep these books on my classroom shelves!
I need to read Norse Mythology by Kevin Crossley-Holland! Thank you for your great suggestions Debra!!
My child likes the Percy Jackson series.
My son is a huge fan!
My nephews are crazy about the Percy Jackson series, so much so that I’ve promised to dive into them myself. I don’t really have a favorite yet. I was thinking more of a British series I used to love, the name of which escapes me at the moment–it started out as children on a seaside adventure and evolved into a grand, imaginative, wild ride. (You know the title will come to me the moment I hit “Post”.)
Now I am curious about the British series … would it be The Dark is Rising? Or Half-Magic?
It was “Dark is Rising”! (Hooray for you, getting it on those clues.) Susan Cooper–particularly in the first book–captured the feeling of the Brit books I loved as a child. I raced through the series as an adult, and now love to gift it.
Hi Beth,
I LOVE The Dark is Rising series!!!
My daughter is just old enough to enjoy this type of book so we haven’t really explored Riordan’s books or others like them yet, but these all look great!
Thanks for entering Kathleen!
“What are your favorite mythology or Rick Riordan books for kids?” I believe the Percy Jackson books are key in the Riordan oeuvre!
Rick Riordan has a few other series besides Percy Jackson but he does keep returning to these characters as they seem to be the most popular though personally I really liked the Magnus Chase series.
I’ve been wanting to read all three of these! Great post.
Thanks so much Deckled Edges!
I love The Lightning Thief!
Hi Edye,
Yay! Me too! My friend Lynne suggested it to me when I first started blogging about ten years ago. My son and I have read all his books ever since.
Cool that he started an imprint for diverse voices and to celebtate that you’re giving away books!
Hi Suzie,
I’m excited about his new imprint series but also wonder if there will be too many of the same kind of books for kids to keep up with. It’s hard to match Riordan’s combination of adventure, humor, and relatable characters.
When I was a kid I loved D’Aulaire’s book of Greek Myths.
Hi Wehaf,
I loved mythology as a kid too. I used to read Edith Hamilton’s books. My kids love D’Aulaire’s books too.
The Trials of Apollo series.
Hi Shakeia,
My son is really enjoying this series. I feel a little sorry for Apollo though Riordan makes his predicament both funny and adventurous.
