It was so fun to meet Susan Tan at her author event at Newtonville Books. Her latest book, Cilla Lee-Jenkins: This Book Is A Classic is a hilarious middle grade book about a mixed protagonist with a big personality.
In this book, she is now a big sister and is excited to be participating in her aunt’s upcoming wedding. Susan Tan talks more about it in this video:
Cilla Lee-Jenkin’s voice comes easily to Susan Tan, and is rife with humorous moments. I always enjoy when an author reads from her own book. I have four parts to her reading aloud. The first part is here. I also have Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.
Susan teaches English at college so she writes her books on the go. She talks about her writing process which involves thumbs:
I have more video of Susan Tan’s author visit on my YouTube Channel: Mia Wenjen. I’m challenging myself to make one video a day of a children’s book so I hope you will subscribe to my channel and let me know what you think. Thanks so much!

Such a cute photo of the two of you! Haven’t yet had a chance to read this one, Mia.
Thanks Maria! Her books are soooo funny!
This is such a fun series for elementary school aged kids! How cool that you got to meet the author!
Hi MaryAnne,
It was fun to FINALLY meet Susan Tan! I feel like I had near misses all year with book events that I wanted to go to but had a conflict. Her series is such fun but also captures what it is like to be mixed-race.
