What are your favorite Halloween books to read with your kids? Thanks for sharing!
7 Fun Halloween Picture Books
Halloween ABC by Jannie Ho
An alphabet book with Jannie Ho’s charming and not scary illustrations. Use this board book to introduce toddlers to the concept of Halloween. You might get costume ideas from this book too! [board book, ages 1 and up]
Fingers for Halloween by Brandt Lewis, illustrated by Cori Doerrfeld
I’ve always loved reading this kind of finger-wiggling interactive board book to my kids when they were little. They delighted in getting physically involved with a book. The rhyming text makes this a fun way to teach kids to count from one to five. [interactive board book, ages 1 and up]
Bizzy Bear Spooky House by Benji Davies
What is great about this interactive board book that has tabs to pull, wheels to spin, and levers to slide is that it is very sturdy for young fingers to tug at. The text is a very basic and simple rhyme; the appeal of this book is interactivity. [interactive board book, ages 1 and up]
Herbert’s First Halloween by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Steven Henry
Halloween can be scary for first-time goers, and Herbert isn’t quite sure about Halloween. His father helps him with his tiger costume, and Herbert practices his roar. By the end of the night, Herbert discovers that candy is everywhere as promised, and Halloween is wonderful! [picture book, ages 2 and up]
I Want to be in a Scary Story by Sean Taylor, illustrated by Jean Jullien
This is a fun story about a little monster who wants to be in a scary story, just not too scary. The narrator makes many revisions with the little monster’s input to get the story just right. This would appeal to kids who find the idea of Halloween to be a little frightening. [funny picture book, ages 4 and up]
The Pomegranate Witch by Denise Doyen, illustrated by Eliza Wheeler
This reads like a classic legend in the vein of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven and is illustrated by the talented Eliza Wheeler of Miss Maple’s Seeds, and Tell Me a Tattoo Story. It’s the story of a creepy, haunted tree that bears the most tempting pomegranates guarded by a witch. In order to harvest the pomegranates, the children must engage in a pomegranate war. In a plot twist, the pomegranate witch has a kind counterpart, but she only comes out once a year at Halloween. [rhyming picture book, ages 6 and up]
Pattan’s Pumpkin: A Traditional Flood Story from Southern India by Chitra Sounder, illustrated by Frané Lessac
This isn’t technically a Halloween story, but I wanted to include this giant pumpkin folk tale from Southern India in the name of diversity. In this story, Pattan found an ailing plant and took it home to care for it. It grew a pumpkin as big as a house. This came in handy when a flood threatened his village. Like Noah’s Arc, Pattan hollows out the pumpkin so that there is room for all the creatures and plants. Think of this story as Noah’s Arc meets Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater. [folk tale picture book, ages 4 and up]
