With the cold weather around the corner, I’m starting to think about changing our dinner menu to stews and soups. It’s not just comfort food; it’s also the ultimate convenience food when you have a brood that gets home at all different times from practices, starving!
The change of seasons also has me thinking about the upcoming holiday season and ways to give back. Last October, my son and his friend did a joint birthday party. In lieu of gifts, asked for donations to a local dog shelter that rescues dogs from kill shelters in the South. When the boys delivered the dog toys and collars and played with the dogs, I think it was the best present anyone could have given them.
I’m always looking for new ways to give back to our community. It’s a gift that teaches my kids gratitude and how great it feels to help others. I was happy to learn about Marie Callender’s Comforts from Home Project. When I grew up in Seal Beach, our local Marie Callendar’s restaurant was a happy place that we all went to eat out at as a family. It was also where we ALWAYS ordered our holiday pies. In fact, I don’t think I can eat a fresh strawberry pie without thinking of Marie Callender’s.
The Comforts from Home Project that Marie Callender’s is re-launching brings the comforts of home to those who protect America’s homes every day: the brave men and women of the U.S. military. This year, Marie Callender’s is teaming up with the USO to support USO Operation Celebration™, a program that shares a bit of home with our troops and helps them celebrate the holidays year round.
It’s pretty easy to participate! Every time you enter a code from specially-marked packages of Marie Callender’s meals or desserts, Marie Callender’s will make a donation to the USO to support USO Operation Celebration™.
Additionally, you can submit your own photos in support of the USO, using #comfortsfromhome – what does home mean to them? — to Marie Callender’s Comforts from Home photo challenge on Facebook and Scripps Network will donate $1 to the USO for each photo received (up to $10K). Selected photos may be featured on air for TV shows including Kitchen Crashers on DIY Network & HGTV, American Heroes on Travel Channel, and Guy’s Grocery Games on Food Network & Cooking Channel.
