When I went away to college thirty-two years ago, I lugged a typewriter and a suitcase to go off to a college that I had never visited before. Luckily, I had a childhood friend, Natalie, who was in the same boat and we set off on our adventure together. This was only the second trip I had ever taken on a plane!
My kids are lucky to be visiting Stanford and manage to catch both a volleyball and a soccer game there!
On the way there at the stopover in Denver, we found another kid lugging a typewriter. We noticed that his typewriter was tagged to the same dorm, Weld, as my friend and figured we were going to the same place. We were.
Stanford Women’s Volleyball. They are ranked #2 behind Penn State!
We added him to become a trio as we landed in Logan Airport, and made our way to a cab. Loading up the cab took several trips and during this chaos, Natalie’s purse was stolen. It turns out that there are thieves canvasing the airport for easy marks. My friend didn’t carry much cash. Most of her money was in traveler’s cheques but her purse included her make up bag with a carefully curated product list. This was traumatizing to lose!
We made our way to campus without further mishap and even managed to find the American Express office walking distance from campus to replace her traveler’s cheques. Eating a slice of pizza in a very hot and humid basement restaurant with water lacking ice cubes, we wondered if we had made the right decision. I mean, we signed up for four years here SIGHT UNSEEN!
Stanford versus Boston College Women’s Soccer Game
I think looking back on that sad first day, Natalie and I would conclude that our four years at college were a great experience though shockingly different for Californians to experience the East Coast. College is great for a temporary residency to try out a different place to live!
My girls are lucky that they have had the opportunity to visit places including many colleges. They find my stories of limited travel to be incredulous and downright hilarious. This past week, they traveled with the Boston College Women’s Soccer Team as they played Stanford and University of the Pacific; two colleges on the other side of the country for them.
I don’t know if either of them will attend either college, but they have heard my stories of airport robbery — I was also pickpocketed in Charles de Gaulle — such that they are downright paranoid with their luggage. Should their toiletries ever get stolen, I would make sure to mail them out a replacement care package and I would include a good razor for the shower like the Schick® Quattro For Women® and shaving cream as a surprise. And I’d add candy too because I remember how snacking and studying go hand in hand.
How about you? How was your first day at college? Do you have a child heading out to college soon?
