I’m so happy that our Picture Book of the Day group is commencing again after a summer hiatus. We’ve started this week and it’s my turn today.
I’ve selected three adventurous dog picture books for you today. How about you? What are your favorite dogs in children’s books? Please share!
Hudson in Provence (A Paris-Chien Adventure) by Jackie Clark Mancuso
Hudson takes off for the south of France for August because he’s a sophisticated Parisian dog and that’s what they do. Lucky dog! He decides not to be tourist dog but a provençal working dog. He meets Gaston, a border collie who herds sheep; and Philippe, a truffle hunter, but neither jobs are for Hudson. It turns out that his talent is painting and he takes commissions!
This lovely picture book also mixes in some French words which is great for exposing kids to a foreign language! [picture book, ages 4 and up]
My Dog, Bob by Richard Torrey
Whose dog is better: Truffles or Bob? Truffles can fetch a stick, sit on command and bark when requested so Mimi, the neighbor, thinks her dog is best. But Bob, the dog of the narrator, is quietly amazing. He can make breakfast for the family including eggs and pancakes. He can drive the car. And his putting stroke is pretty good too. This picture book is quietly hilarious and fans of Martha Speaks! will especially love it! [picture book, ages 2 and up]
Whispers of the Wolf by Pauline Ts’o
Our pet dogs of today evolved from the wolf and Pauline Ts’o tells the story of a Pueblo Boy, Two Birds, who rescues a wolf pup and raises it with love. Their relationship helps Two Birds find the voice within himself and make new friends. When the wolf is old enough to return to his pack, Two Birds must decide to let his wolf go or keep it as a pet. [picture book, ages 6 and up]

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I just read “Whispers of the Wolf” and will review it. Have some new releases from Wisdom Tales Press and wondered if they will be part of the Multicultural Children’s Book Day. I like your choice of “Hudson in Provence,” where kids are exposed to French.
Hi Patricia,
Yes!! We are thrilled that Wisdom Tales is coming back again as a Platinum Sponsor and we will be sharing a few of their great titles with the bloggers who sign up for Multicultural Children’s Book Day. Their new picture book by Joseph Bruchac is great!! I just read it!
