New Captain Underpants GIVEAWAY!

New Captain Underpants GIVEAWAY!

Posted on August 25, 2015May 12, 2024 by Pragmatic Mom

My son learned to read independently because of Captain Underpants and other graphic novels. He would actually ask me to take him to the library, which he often confuses for a book store, and head straight to the graphic novel section way in the back of the children’s section. He had very specific tastes in graphic novels and would scour the shelves for Captain Underpants, The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby, Ninjago, and that’s about it.

reading graphic novels

At the school book fair loaded with $25 in cash, he returned with The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, 100 Most Disgusting Things on the Planet and a lot of leftover money. Usually, we read together as shared reading partners. Not with these graphic novels. He would read them all himself, happily in his car seat on the way home.

ABOUT THE BOOK Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-a-Lot by Dav Pilkey In stores August 25 –that’s today! There’s something rotten in the state of Ohio, and it’s smellier than a pile of putrid gym socks! Steer clear–it’s Sir Stinks-A-Lot! George, Harold, and their doubles, Yesterday George and Yesterday Harold, have a good thing going. Two of them go to school, while the other two hide in the tree house and play video games all day–then they switch! But when their malicious gym teacher, Mr. Meaner, creates a method of mind control that turns their fellow students into attentive, obedient, perfect children, the future of all humanity will be in their hands! Dav Pilkey ABOUT THE AUTHOR When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he suffered from ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral problems. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hall every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books. In the second grade, Dav Pilkey created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher ripped it up and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books. Fortunately, Dav was not a very good listener. To examine any book more closely at Amazon, please click on image of book.

My grandson is like your son, in that he loves to read Captain Underpants! He reads these books over and over. It has really helped his reading skills and his confidence with reading too! Oh and his 2 sisters also love to read these.

Jennifer Holms’ graphic novel series Babymouse illustrated by the author’s brother, is a favorite in my library. We love Captain Underpants, and I hope to meet Dav Pilkey who will appear at the University Bookstore in Seattle in about a week! Did you know he beat Newbery author Grace Lin in a writing contest when they were both in elementary school? Grace revealed this during her talk at the University of Washington last November.

      Hi Karen,
I just bought the Holm’s latest, Sunny Side Up. I’m excited to read it. I had no idea that Dav and Grace were at the same elementary school. Was that after she moved to California! That is so cool! I’m glad he got support for his writing in school. From his bio on the back cover, it sounded like he didn’t which made me sad and a little angry.

Hi Mia, No, I don\’t think Pilkey and Lin were at the same school. They just entered the same writing contest — was my takeaway from Grace\’s comments. You\’re right, though, that Pilkey plays up his dismal elementary school experience in his bio info and the talk I heard at University of WA Bookstore this past Friday. See more on my twitter feed.
