Gorilla Tough: Boxing, Books and a Tablet

Gorilla Tough: Boxing, Books, and a Tablet

What do you associate with a gorilla? For me, it’s my boxing gym. I once took a boxing class with Nate, the other co-founder of Nonantum Boxing Club. When I saw my trainer — his cousin — I asked, “For a big guy, isn’t Nate surprisingly light on his feet?” Because if you saw Nate hopping over low hurdles in a delicate way like a gazelle, it’s a little incongruent with his beefy frame. My trainer replied, “Nate is a gorilla.”

Nate is on the left. My trainer is on the right.

Nonantum Boxing ClubNate is always cleaning. He cleans the gym, the firehouse and his home for his wife and three kids!

And the first thing he does when he comes to the gym is clean it. We thank him for that because when Nate is there, the gym smells less like a locker room. It’s been my habit to gift him with a gorilla children’s book for him to read to his three kids as a holiday gift. So when I received an Acer Iconia Tab 10 Tablet with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4 to review, the first thing I thought of was a gorilla.

Like a gorilla, the Acer Iconia Tab 10 Tablet is tough. In laboratory tests, Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4 survives up to 80% of the time when dropped from 3 feet high, and was up to 2x tougher than competitive glass designs especially against sharp contact, such as a drop on asphalt, concrete, and other rough surfaces. It is also resistant against drops and scratches and has an anti-fingerprint coating.

You can use the Acer Iconia Tab 10 for apps, websites, smooth video playback and mobile gaming. It’s great for video conferencing and recording video for YouTube and Facebook thanks to the 5MP rear-facing Full HD camera. But I will use the large screen — 10.1-inch FULL HD display (1920 x 1200 resolution — for reading eBooks. These books in particular…

Gorilla Book List for Kids

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

I gifted this to Nate last year and he said that he and his 8-year-old read it together at bedtime and that they both really liked it. It’s a Newbery award-winning book about a captive gorilla in a shopping mall with a special gift. [chapter book, ages 8 and up]

Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate

This year, I gifted the non-fiction companion book about the real Ivan. [non-fiction picture book, ages 4 and up]

One Gorilla: A Counting Book by Anthony Browne

Even though Nate’s kids are a little old for a counting book, they might get this next year. The illustrations of primates are spectacular in this picture book. I covet a copy for myself too! [picture book, ages 2 and up]

Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathman

It’s hard to put the zoo animals to sleep at night if you are the kind of zookeeper that thinks of the animals as your own children. There’s also a surprise on every page spread. See if you can spot the red balloon and the mouse with a banana for the gorilla! [picture book, ages 2 and up]

Gorillas by Seymour Simon

Are you in love with gorillas yet? Learn more about these gentle social creatures in this Smithsonian non-fiction book filled with lush photographic illustrations. [non fiction chapter book, ages 8 and up]

The Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3-A20FHD-K8KX has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $249.99 in the U.S. Additional models are available in the U.S. and Canada. More details can be found here.

How about you? Have you fallen in love with gorillas yet? And if you are in the market for a tablet computer, would you want the screen to be resilient like a gorilla?
