Today I have two beautiful ABC books that feature photographic images. It was hard to choose one for the Picture Book of the Day but in the spirit of summer exploration, I had to go with The Alphabet of Bugs. Here’s hoping that your kids will discover some insect gems from this book in your garden (but not your house!).
The Alphabet of Bugs: An ABC Book with photography by Ann Cutting and design and alliteration by Valerie Gates
Now that spring is here, this beautiful collection of A to Z insects makes you want to get outdoors to spot them. The alliterative text makes for tongue-twisting and also serves to identify each photograph.
I really love the design of the book; the backgrounds of each insect allow it to shine forth, balanced by an equally strong color on the opposite page that pulls from a shade in the bug. The large alphabet letter is also a good counterpart to the insect on the adjacent page.
In all, this is a beautifully, well-conceived and executed book that highlights the diversity of insects around us. [picture book, ages 1 and up]
For those who want a multicultural alphabet adventure, let’s armchair travel together to Culebra, Puerto Rico with El ABC de Culebra, P.R./ The ABC of Culebra, P.R. by Juan C. Garavito Medina. This Kickstarter project was beautifully brought to life!

This looks like a really nice book! 😀
Hi Erik,
I loved the photos of the bugs! The layout of the book with complimentary colors on the opposite page really set off the photos.
What a great idea and a beautiful book. I am working on several picture books about dogs and puppies. I’m happy I discovered your blog X Susie
Thanks so much Susie! I think this picture book has such great layout and colors. It’s perfectly conceived and executed!
So many kids are fascinated with bugs/insects. I love that it is an alphabet book.
Hi Patricia,
Me too and it would work for older kids who love to be outside!
What a great cover! My daughter collected bugs with a friend one summer. They had so much fun and some of those bugs were so beautiful. 🙂
Hi Renee,
The rest of the book is equally stunning as the cover. I was so impressed by the layout and design of this book. It’s a gem!

Hi Training Mummy,
I think it would be fun to take outside when the kids find bugs!
Love the concept of these two books. Thanks for sharing the titles. Have you seen my alphabet picture book on spiders? Its called Arachnabet.
Hi Tracey,
Your alphabet book sounds great! I think spiders are wondrous creatures but my oldest is scared of them.
