I received a Kobo Glo HD to review and it immediately disappeared, snatched up by my kids. We have other eReaders in the house but I had loaded this one with the new Rick Riordan ebook, The Crown of Ptolomy, and more Wonder stories by R. J. Palacio.
My son has been waiting for the newest Riordan book and he took theKobo Glo HD and went off to read it, despite being in the middle of three other books.
The Abracadabra Kid: A Writer’s Life by Sid Fleishman
Sid Fleishman is best known for his Newbery winner The Whipping Boy but he has a fascinating story of a teen magician who toured as a vaudeville act to the long path of turning to children’s book author. My son loved this autobiography so much, he’s using it for a school writing assignment on biographies.
The Book That Proves Time Travel Happens by Henry Clark
This is a funny time travel adventure with a diversity cast representing both genders. Henry Clark has an interesting writing history as well. He has contributed articles to MAD magazine and published fiction in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine. This mix of funny and science fiction is a sure-fire hit for kids!
The Unofficial Holy Bible for Minecrafters: A Children’s Guide to the Old and New Testament by Christopher Miko
I’ll take my Bible study any way I can get it. My son hasn’t been interested in learning about the old or new testament until now … I guess he prefers his Bible stories told through a Minecraft graphic novel. That works for me!
PickyKidPix also took off with theKobo Glo HD, bringing to middle school. She had just finished a book she borrowed from a classmate, and needed a new book FAST! The Kobo Glo is great for immediate gratification!
I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
She also wanted to read the new R. J. Palacio stories about Wonder which are only available as eBooks which is why they escaped me earlier! She’s challenging to find books for so I like theKobo Glo HD feature of book recommendations based on what you picked, as well as free previews and reviews, and the Kobo eBookstore which is not overwhelming to browse.
Grasshopper and Sensei might like the YA books I picked for her. She’s about to go to Australia for 6 weeks of service, camping and homestay through her YMCA sleepaway camp and myKobo Glo HD might be the perfect solution for her reading material since she needs to pack everything she’ll need in a backpack that she can carry herself. TheKobo Glo HD stores up to 3,000 eBooks and has a battery life of up to 2 months which is perfect for her trip!
I’ve picked for her:
The Selection by Kiera Cass
I’ve been hearing great things about this Cinderella series:
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
Maximum Ride Forever by James Patterson
My daughter read most of this series in middle school so I think she might like the last installment that wraps everything up. It would be a fun summer read!
It’s becoming clear to me that an eReader is not a replacement for hard copy books, but a necessary tool for children’s book bloggers! The reading experience is wonderful too.
The 6” HD Carta E Ink touchscreen has a fully adjustable ComfortLight allowing you to READ IN THE DARK. You can also adjust fonts, sizes and margins which would be great for my husband who needs reading glasses but hasn’t done anything yet to get them.
There’s also a Kobo App that is available on iOS, Android, Blackberry 10, Windows 8 or Windows 8 Phone or Desktop Computer. This allows you to read anytime, anywhere, on any device!
I’m thrilled to own aKobo Glo HD. My only challenge will be to wrestle it away from my kids! How about you? Are you using eReaders and how has that been for you?

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Clever Mom! Great way to keep kids reading! I have a Kobo, but not the Kobo Glow. Don’t like reading books on a screen, bothers my eyes. Prefer reading a book in hand.
Hi Patricia,
I prefer a physical book too but now some add on books that we really really want to read are only available as eBooks like the Wonder add ons by R J Palacio and Rick Riordan books that combine the Kane siblings with Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. So I guess that’s how they hook you!
