BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I love your blog! As a homeschooling mom of 5 girls I always find something interesting on your page.
Thanks so much for your kind words Sarah! You totally just made my day!
Loved Tiger Rising. There are some interesting MG and YA books too that are intriguing like A Monster Calls.
Hi Patricia,
I love Kate Di Camillo too but I found Tiger Rising to be too intensely sad for my third grader. I am thrilled to be giving way these great Candlewick Press books today! They are near me in Cambridge and I’ve always loved their books! I don’t think they’ve every published a bad children’s book! 🙂
Such great books!!
Feed has such an interesting voice, and is a very powerful book.
I also loved the two Kate DiCamillo books. I’m very excited because Edwin Tulane’s illustrator, Bagram Ibatoulline will be illustrating my upcoming nonfiction book on coyotes. His work is so intricately detailed and full of dynamism.
Thanks, Mia!
Hi Maria,
Wow! Congrats on your upcoming book on coyotes. I’d love to be part of your book tour launch!
Thanks, Mia! I would love to!! My first book, Penny & Jelly: The Schol Show, a fiction PB, will release in July, so I’d love to have you be part of the launch!! I’m in the process of organizing/arranging that now. My coyote book, Coyote Moon, will come out in the winter of 2016.
Thanks again for all of your great posts & giveaways!!
Hi Maria,
If you want me to do a cover release or a book trailer release as well to start the excitement building before the book is out, please let me know. I’d love to!
Thank you so much, Mia! You’re so kind! I really appreciate it! I don’t yet have a book trailer, only the cover at this point.
I forgot to ask–how are things in Newton? How much snow did you get?
Hi Maria,
Definitely make one; a middle school kid or high school kid can make amazing ones. Let me know if you need help. I know two kids who are great and would work cheap!
For some reason I wasn’t able to reply to your most recent reply about the book trailer. I’ve been in touch with Kirsten Cappy/Curious City, so I’m waiting to hear back from her. I definitely want a book trailer, so I’ll be back in touch depending upon what she’ll be doing for me. Thanks again so much, Mia!!
Hi Maria,
I can’t wait to watch your book trailer! I’m so excited for your book given your superlative taste in children’s books!!
Thanks, Mia! Did you see that The Farmer & the Clown won the mock Caldecott on at the Horn Book?
And The Right Word as well as Sam and Dave Dig a Hole were mock honorees 🙂
Hi Maria,
No, I didn’t but I’m glad. I love Marla Frazee! Looks like you are on the money!
Its hard to pick one Mia.. there are so many good ones.. I love At the end of the sidewalk and Sick day for Amos Mcgee and we have read those two so many times, that we have them by heart!
-Reshama
Hi Reshama,
We love A Sick Day for Amos Mcgee too! I don’t think we’ve read At the End of the Sidewalk!
We love the book Blueberries for Sal
Hi Evelyn,
Me too!!!!
On the children’s list, Journey is pretty spectacular! My personal favorites are Olivia (always) and Where the Wild Things Are.
Hi Danzel,
I love your picks!!!
Library Lion and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt are two of my all-time favorites!
Hi MaryAnne,
Those are great picks!!
So many of my favorite books are from Candlewick. While they didn’t make the list above, while not on the list above, I must give a shout-out to the following-
A Perfect Place For Ted
I reviewed it over at “Talking Animal Addicts” and loved it so much I made a fan trailer for it! Leila Rudge’s illustrations have this simple charm to them you can’t help but immerse yourself in.
Big Mean Mike
Another great picture book by Michelle Knudsen (illus. Scott Magoon)
I reviewed this on T.A.A. last year. I also made a fan trailer for it, too!
WEASELS
I LOVED Elys Dolan’s pop art illustrations in this book, and while minimal in text, the pictures really carry the weight of the storytelling, and does a great job. My only “warning” to parents, it’s a BIG book (dimension-wise) but worth the extra real estate.
Hi Taurean,
Thanks so much for your great book recommendations!!! I will have to read all three of them!!
The Cat in the Hat and Charlotte’s Web
Hi Gloria,
Two of my favorites!!
The Snowy Day is my favorite. I remember my mom reading it to me.
Hi Beth,
LOVE, love, love The Snowy Day and it is so apropos for me today as I am in the Boston Blizzard! 🙂 14 inches so far and it’s just getting going!
I LOVE I Want My Hat Back! I will have my own elementary classroom in the fall so I’m working on building a classroom library – these books would be SUCH an amazing addition! 🙂 Thanks for this giveaway!
Hi Elizabeth,
I hope you win! Thanks for entering! Always glad to contribute to a class library — I hold that sacred!
I want my hat back, and library lion.
Hi Cb,
Love your picks! Thanks so much for entering!
I adore so many of them- any of the Dr Seuss, Little Bear, Katy and Mike Mulligan, Elephant and Piggie, The Pigeon, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Snowy Day… I’ll stop before I’ve just copied the entire list!

The Miraculous Journey of Ed Tulane
I’ve always liked The Giving Tree
Hi Sandra,
That’s such a great classic!
We love a lot of them but Owl Moon and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus are two of our favorites that I regularly loan out from the library.
Hi Lej,
Those are favorites of ours too!!
I’m so happy I found your blog! As a second grade teacher who is now a stay-at-home mom to 3 little girls, I LOVE books!! Seriously, can not get enough of them!! 🙂
Hi Sarah W,
Me too! 🙂 Thank so much for your kind words!
My favorite picture books on the Times Top 100 Children’s Books of All Time List are The Snowy Day, Tuesday, Click Clack Moo, Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Press Here, Peter Rabbit, Diary of a Wombat, Extra Yarn, We Are in a Book!, Journey, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and the Poky Little Puppy. Did I mention I’m a children’s librarian? It was hard to pick favorites.
Hi Bridget,
Such great picks!!! Sounds to me like you need to be judging children’s literature competitions! Have you ever judged for the Cybils? That’s a great one!
The Story of Ferdinand. I just love it and have since childhood.
Hi Lisa,
That was one of my favorites as a child too! I loved reading about Spain and the ceremonies of the bull fight.
As a reading specialist who frequently reads to students, it would be fabulous to win this collection. A recent study reported that 83% of children across age groups say they love being read to—studies also seem to suggest that if you do, they are more likely to become Frequent readers.
Hi Sandra,
You totally deserve to win this! I hope you win, good luck but only Rafflecopter decides.
