I posted on CWIST’s learning challenges that parents select for their kids and reward them as they see fit. For the holiday season, CWIST has a program that lets kids earn a present for a child in need who might not have any presents under the tree this year!
First, we chose a boy just like him: 10-years-old who likes games.
Next I chose the CWIST challenge: Picturesque Prime Numbers. My son likes math and patterns but I don’t think he’s done a unit at school on prime numbers recently.
The CWIST challenge has some great short videos built in!
Finally, we chose the gift: Snap Circuit Jr.
I was thrilled that they have Snap Circuits to give to a child in need. It’s a really wonderful STEM toy that my son played with at a friend’s house and I love that we can share this science experiment kit with others just as someone did for my son!
His completed CWIST Prime Number challenge looked like this:
My son marks off multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 11 using different colors for the CWIST.
His CWIST challenge is complete: the circled numbers are all primes!
My son really loved doing the CWIST challenge to earn a gift for a child in need. It also teaches him the spirit of holiday giving! That’s a wonderful gift as well! PickyKidPix said that she would donate 15 minutes of her time next to complete a CWIST to earn a child a gift! I love how the spirit of giving is spreading in our house!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Surely, a win-win situation, and a great way to stretch two minds at once!
Hi Barbara Ann,
I am trying to get my girls to do the CWIST challenge too but I had trouble getting it to work. My son loved doing it and would do more if he is allowed to earn more gifts. It was a very easy way to give back!
That’s Wonderful ! Learning and giving at the same time.
Thanks Aparna,
I thought it was a terrific way to teach kids how satisfying it is to give back!
What great way to give and have fun at the same time. This is all new to me. Everyone wins and your son is proud he gave a gift to anothe boy in need.
Hi Patricia,
Yes, it was a wonderful experience! Next year, I think I will get all my kids to do it and if we are allowed to, we would do it more than once each.
