I went through ten weeks of curated videos from The Kid Should See This to select these four for my 10-year-old son and chose a book to accompany each video. I hope you and your kids enjoy it!
What educational videos are you watching with your kids? Please share!
Dreadnoughtus: A New Dinosaur Discovery!
I picked this video for my son because he still as a great love of dinosaurs. And a new dinosaur discovery is something he would not want to miss! My son loves the carnivores and while the Dreadnoughtus is a plant eater, it’s awesomely huge!
Dinosaurs for Kids by Ken Ham
I think this the most up to date dinosaur book for kids! Peek inside a dinosaur egg, discover what dinosaurs really ate, and learn how dinosaur tracks are made – all in this awesomely illustrated book! [non fiction picture book, ages 9 and up]
The Challenge of Switching Lighthouse Keepers
My son loved this video of how difficult it is to get a lightkeeper onto the lighthouse during what looks like a violent storm. Want to learn more about what life is like living on an island lighthouse? Watch this and read Newbery honor easy chapter book The Light at Tern Rock!
The Light at Tern Rock by Julia A Sauer, illustrated by George Schreiber
Ronnie and his aunt are tending the Tern Rock lighthouse while the keeper takes a vacation. Ronnie loves living in the lighthouse, and looks forward to telling his family about it at Christmas. But the days go by, and the lighthouse keeper doesn’t return to take them home . . . [easy chapter book, ages 8 and up]
Jim Henson’s Cut Paper Jazz Animation
My son is more of a rock n roll and blues guy on the guitar than jazz but I like to expose him to different musical genres. I’m coaxing him into jazz with this cut paper animation video by Jim Henson (yes, the muppet guy!) with jazz music by Drum West. Pair this with Charlie Parker Played Be Bop! for a short board book read for the littles. In fact, the animation and book combo works great for toddlers and preschoolers!
Charlie Parker Played Be Bop! by Chris Raschka
Get into the mood of the jazz beat with this swinging board book by Chris Raschka! [board book, ages 2 and up]
Skateboard Tricks in Slow Motion
My son doesn’t skateboard that much but he likes watching experts do tricks. This is skateboarder and YouTuber Chris Chann in slow motion. You can find him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and, of course, YouTube.
I just so happen to have a skateboard books for boys book list that I created for a reluctant 6th grader boy reader. It worked too!
My son is more likely to learn skateboard tricks from YouTube videos than a book, but here’s a book anyway! This younger generation has a propensity to self-learn and share via YouTube. I like that!
Mastering Skateboarding by Per Welinder
Two-time world champion skateboarder Per Welinder teams up with longtime skateboard advocate Peter Whitley to bring you the techniques and tricks used by the pros. [non fiction, ages 12 and up]

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Always a nice option to have both a book and video.
Thanks so much Barbara! I just couldn’t help myself 🙂
What a neat post and inspiring reading idea! I love finding educational videos for my kids that are also entertaining. They tend to just want to look at Minecraft videos, which seems like it would get boring after a while but not to them.
Thanks so much Ann. My son is obsessed with Minecraft videos too so he’s a good screener of educational videos as most are boring to him!
Hello Pragmatic Mom,
I’m re-tweeting your post but just wanted to let you know that we create educational music along with a video at Silly School Songs. Hope you find it effective if you get a chance to listen,
Thanks for the resources above.

Love that website. There are many interesting videos there. I also like your matching books idea. We have been using youTubes. I subscribed to several channels, asapScience is one of recent favorites.
Hi iGameMom,
Thanks for the heads up on asapScience. I shall see if I can lure my son into it. He’s obsessed with Minecraft videos!
What interesting ideas, Mia. My son would love the skateboarding video!
We have done lots of scientific educational videos, but not much else, beside bigger budget movies. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Hi Lisa,
I’m so glad you liked the videos. I hope your kids do too! My son wanted to share them, especially the foods you eat wrong video!
