I’m really excited to go to the Boston Book Festival which starts Thursday, October 23 but the big day is really Saturday, October 25, with a schedule that includes …
Rick Riordan kicking of the Kids’ Keynote at 10:45 at Trinity Sanctuary. My son was recently hospitalized due to a large congenital cyst that was surgically removed and we got through those three days in the hospital because of The Blood of Olympus. My son preferred it to the television selection!
I definitely want to catch this one!
There will be Character Connections all day. If you live near Boston, be sure to see your favorite picture book character!
Get up close and personal with some of today’s biggest (and fuzziest) picture book celebrities! Stop by for a meet and greet and photo op, or take a break from the day’s activities in our book nook. There will also be arts and crafts activities all day long.
Character Connection Schedule:
10:00 Appearance by Corduroy
10:45 Appearance by Llama Llama
11:45-12:15 Costume Parade
12:45 Appearance by Curious George
2:15 Appearance by Pete the Cat
At 1:00, there’s Middle Grade: Master of Fantasy at Emmanuel Sanctuary.
Gregory Maguire, best known as the author of Wicked, has always been first and foremost an author for young people; his latest, Egg and Spoon, incorporates elements of Russian folklore.
Soman Chainani goes beyond “happily ever after” with A World Without Princes, the sequel to The School for Good and Evil.
And Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, both literary superstars in their own right, team up on The Iron Trial, about a reluctant hero’s first year at a school for mages.
I would also like to catch authors and illustrators reading their own books aloud. That’s always fun!
A terrific selection of today’s best picture book authors and illustrators read aloud from their work and demonstrate their talents in these interactive sessions for kids of all ages.
Story Time Schedule:
10:30-11:00 Anna Dewdney reads from Llama Llama Red Pajama
11:30-12:00 David Ezra Stein reads from I’m My Own Dog
12:30-1:00 Tony DiTerlizzi reads from Star Wars: The Adventures of Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight
1:30-2:00 Chris Raschka reads from Alphabetabum: An Album of Rare Photographs and Medium Verses
I can tell already that I’m going to have trouble deciding which Kids and Teens programs to attend. This is only a fraction of what is offered!
I’ll be attending Boston Book Festival in conjunction with the U.Fund Dreams Tour. Getting kids to love to read is one surefire way to prepare kids for college and, as we near the end of the year holiday season, it’s a great time to think about putting some money aside to pay for college.
If you haven’t already thought about a 529 college savings plan, be sure to stop by the U.Fund Dreams Tour booth. It’s a tax advantaged college savings plan that I’m using for my three kids and contributions to your child’s college saving plan might be one suggestion to the relatives who wonder what to buy your kids this holiday season!
I hope to see you there!
p.s. My son was out of his mind with excitement that Rick Riordan wished him a speedy recovery! He has read every single word that Rick Riordan ever published regarding mythology adventures! I pre-order all Riordan books for him and he counts down the days until they arrive.

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
I hope your son is doing well and you can attend the festival. You are so lucky to have a wonderful Book Festival near you. Have a geat time!
Hi Patricia,
Thanks so much! I ended up going alone. My son was well enough to come with me but he said that he saw Mr. Riordan at the Mega Awesome Event and he preferred to stay home, especially since there was no book signing so he wouldn’t be able to actually meet him. Still, I just got back from the event and Rick Riordan was wildly entertaining as usual. Trinity Church in Copley Plaza was pretty full with about 1000 kids and adults there!
I hope your son’s on the mend too!
Wish I still lived in the Boston area 🙁
Have fun!
Thanks so much Maria!! I’ll post video and photos of Rick Riordan’s speech so that you will feel like you were right there with me!!
Here’s hoping that your son is already better! Wish I lived a bit closer…this festival sounds great!
Hi Barbara,
I promise to post on it such that you feel like you were there listening to Rick Riordan too! I just got back from it and I’ll edit a video to share!
So excited about this festival! There really is a rich lineup of authors and events to attend!
Hi Katie,
Today is turning out to be the best day weather-wise in Boston so it’s always a lucky turn of events. It’s been raining all week so I’m glad the big day for the Boston Book Festival is also getting the nicest weather! It is a great festival for book lovers of all ages!
Healing thoughts for your son.
The festival sounds amazing.
Thank you so much Penny! He’s feeling like his old self again and even played soccer yesterday! I think next week, he’ll return to all the sports he usually plays. I just got back from hearing Rick Riordan at the Boston Book Festival and it was fun!! I’ll post on it soon such that you feel like you were there too!
