Baby Penguins Everywhere!, Picture Book of the Day, Melissa Guion

Picture Book for Parents with Kids Back in School GIVEAWAY

Posted on September 5, 2014May 15, 2024 by Pragmatic Mom

I’m happy that our Picture Book of the Day group is reconvening for the school year. I’m up today with my pick and it’s for all the parents out there celebrating kids going back to school!

How was your summer? Are you sad it’s over but happy that school is back in full swing? Please share!

Penguin Picture Book of the Day

Baby Penguins Everywhere! by Melissa Guion

There are lots of picture books for kids starting preschool or kindergarten, but this one is for parents whose kids are going back to school! Or at least, this is my take! A female penguin was all alone enjoying the sea and ice when a hat appeared and out jumped a LOT of baby penguins. She wasn’t lonely anymore, but every now and then, she just needed a minute to herself. This should be mandatory reading for toddlers and preschoolers! [picture book, ages 2 and up]

Melissa Guion paints penguins here.

I feel a little sad because they are growing so fast, a little sad that my summer vacation is over since I work in a school, and a little optimistic for the fun things that will happen throughout the school year.

      Hi Valerie,
You sum up the conflicted feelings I have too about first day of school! It’s such a mix of happy, sad and wait and see!

Having enjoyed my two oldest grandchildren since birth while babysitting them each day, I was in awe of them as I welcomed them back to “Grammy’s” house after their first day of school ( the oldest in second grade and his sister in kindergarten). They were so joyful and confident!

How wonderful that you got to experience your grandkids’ first day of school! They are so lucky to have you as their babysitter!

As a mom, I am happy for them to continue their education but as a teacher I am sad that summer is so short. 🙂

      Hi Bobbi,
Is it just me or was this summer unusually short?!! I hope we get an extra week next year; one week more makes a big difference! It still feels like summer weather-wise too!

I like it! I think children enjoy meeting new friends and seeing old friends. Thanks for the opportunity.

      Hi Nicole-Lynn,
Thanks so much for entering. You bring up such a great reason for all of us to be excited for back to school! We hardly see anyone during the summer so it IS nice to reconnect with everyone; kids and parents!

This book sounds adorable! I am always torn when my kids head back to school. I love having time with them, but I do love getting some time to myself (with Anna) as well!

      Hi MaryAnne,
The time when the kids are in school flies by, doesn’t it? I know you are super busy during the school day with Anna. But it is nice to have scheduled time when you can finally get a few things done! It’s the same for me.

I have always worked outside the home so my son has been at school since he was 3 months old so it isn’t any different for me.

Glad you like the picture book and are able to get a few moments to yourself as a busy parent who also works outside the home!

This book sounds so nice! Enjoyed the illustration video too. I love when my kids get home from school. Seems like 3 o’clock rolls around so fast but then when I see them it feels life it has been ages since I have seen them, strange!

      Hi Ann,
The school day does go quickly and things get much more lively when the kids are back home from school! It’s a flurry of
“I’m hungry” and food and homework for a while for me! My husband and I relish the brief quiet when they are gone but you are right, it can get too quiet!
