This year is the first year we are breaking with our tradition of strawberry picking for Father’s Day.
My husband came up with this idea years ago and every year we hold our breath that the strawberries will be ready for Father’s Day picking.
Some years, it doesn’t get hot enough and there might be only one farm near us with You Pick strawberries. Another year, we waited past Father’s Day and the strawberries were picked over so it was hard to fill a basket.
And there was that one year when it was over 100 degrees in the shade but we still went!
This year, PickyKidPix‘s soccer schedule conflicts with our Father’s Day tradition but we will find another weekend to pick strawberries since our own strawberry harvest is quite meager. I think the squirrels get most of the strawberries in our little garden.
We always pick a few extra baskets to deliver to our local firehouse too. That’s a tradition worth preserving!
We went to Russell Orchards in Boston’s North Shore most recently. It’s great coupled with a pit stop to The Clam Box for lunch. Be sure to call your order in ahead of time though because the line can be long!
Hope all the dads out there are having a great Father’s Day! Do you have a Father’s Day tradition too? Please share!
p.s. Here are two funny videos to celebrate dads!
The sequel to the Mom Song … the Dad Song is quite brief as it is making a very specific point:
The Dad Life Video is fun too!

Nice tradition…so kind of you to share!
Thanks Barbara,
We still have to go strawberry picking this year or we’ll fail at continuous years of this tradition. Good reminder …
Given that graduation at Stanford is ALWAYS on Father’s Day, and Mike is required to at least attend the department ceremony, I’d say that is our new tradition. We usually have a pretty laid-back day, and I try to focus on activities Mike enjoys. Today he got to meet Bill Gates, which made it a pretty special day for him 🙂
Hi MaryAnne,
What a fun tradition to celebrate Father’s Day with Stanford’s grads! Meeting Bill Gates seems like a fantasy Father’s Day, especially for a dad with expertise in computer science like Mike! Wow! That will be hard to top next year!!!
What a great family tradition for the kids and Dad to look forward to every year. Like the focus on nature. And, I love the photos!
Thanks so much Patricia,
It’s been a fun tradition even when the weather does not cooperate!
We always have dinner at my parents house and then we hang out there. My dad and husband watch golf 🙂
The strawberry tradition sounds fun and your videos are funny!!!
Hi Ann,
Your Father’s Day sounds lovely and relaxing!! Hope you had a great weekend!
OMG too funny. As I was reading your post I was feeling badly that we didn’t do something healthy like pick fresh fruit. For the last few years our tradition has been to go to … THE CLAM BOX….and then I saw that you do, too!! I got the lobster roll, which was just slightly more healthy than Russ’s fried clams and Justine’s fried fish. YUM!!
Happy Father’s Day, Tai!! xo
Hi Roberta,
We LOVE The Clam Box!! The line is so long that we finally figured out that we need to call in our order to go an hour before we want to eat! I hope to see you there next year at Father’s Day!! We missed it this week because of soccer tournaments but it is a great fun for all of us! The strawberries and especially the clam shack!!
We go camping at Timothy Lake near Mt. Hood in Oregon. My husband and two sons got several rainbow trout. It’s always fun actually catching fish!
I was just describing a lobster roll to my kids. I would love to go to the Clam Box or back to Maine for some lobster rolls! You are lucky to live on the East Coast and eat lobster rolls…..
We love picking strawberries too but soccer tournaments have gotten in the way of doing that. 🙂
Hi Kim,
I love your Father’s Day tradition! My husband would LOVE that! He loves to fish and I don’t think he’s ever been able to fish for rainbow trout!
You should try making lobster rolls for your kids though those hotdog buns (square-ish ones) might be just a local thing here. Some chefs keep it very simple; I like it best that way too with almost no mayo.
