I’m really excited to be judging Graphics (as in graphic novels) for the 2013 Cybils! What am I excited to read? Graphic novels that tell a great story, get kids excited to read, and have beautiful illustrations doing some of the heavy lifting of storytelling. I’d also love to discover more graphic stories for younger kids and especially some geared for girls. Graphic novels are my secret weapon for reluctant readers. I’ll be excited to share them with you … eventually!
Please meet my esteemed colleagues for round two. You can also follow them on Twitter. We are not allowed to blog on the short list that Round 1 judges will come up with until after the awards are announced but expect to hear more about great graphic novels from me shortly after that.
Want to nominate a children’s book for the Cybils? That will be coming up shortly!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Congratulations! You will be wonderful!
Thanks so much Karen! I am excited to be reading more graphic novels! My son will be especially happy because he loves this genre and I will be getting his feedback!
Congrats! Enjoy your reading! Cybils is one of my favorite times of the year…glad you are on board!
Thanks so much Deb! I’m thrilled to be part of the Cybils!
Congratulations! You are perfect for this. Have fun with it!
Thanks so much Christine!! You are so kind to say that! I’m looking forward to it and will keep you all posted on what it is like (while not actually talking about books on the short list).
HUGE congratulations, Mia–that’s going to be a lot of fun!
Have you yet read Jane, the Fox and Me? I LOVED it.
Thank you so much Maria!! I am looking forward to it and learning more about how the Cybils work!
Yay! You’re a great choice for a judge! I was thinking I might apply next year, but I knew I was not organized enough right now to go for it. I look forward to hearing about your experience.
Hi Erica,
I applied last year but I missed the deadline by a week so I had to mark my calendar to remember this year. I’m really excited and I’ll post on the process. I chose graphics too because I’m hoping it’s a smaller category with shorter books so I can get it done without too much craziness. I would have loved to do chapter books but I knew I couldn’t handle that time commitment. You should apply for next year but pick a category that is not as time consuming.
Yay, that is so cool! Can’t wait to see the list!
Graphic novels are amazing to me for the shear volume of illustrations that go into them. I also love how they read like watching a movie.
Thanks so much Ann!! I love graphic novels (new convert) so I’m very, very excited!
