Home Library Inspirations
All this watching of Downton Abbey and their libraries has me on the search for the perfect home library. Pinterest is where I daydream and I’ve been collecting ideas on my Home Library Inspiration board.
How do you get the perfect combination of cozy, book capacity, wired desk space, and reading spaces? Are you a ladder person? Should it be tucked away or in a prominent spot? Should kids have their own reading nooks or can you share? Should cookbooks get their own space? All of the above?
What do you think? Do you have a special cozy spot to read?
Home Library as Office
An office and a home library. Nice sharing! But you need really high ceiling heights.

French Doors are nice for separation.

No Wasted Space Home Libraries
This seems like a good use of hallway space. Is it the curved hallway that makes this so appealing? Would a straight hallway look this good?

A hallway library but you’d need it to be quite wide to allow for space for two bookcases on either wall.

A hallway library but will it ever get utilized?

Such a cozy spot out of a narrow space! It’s perfect for those quirky stairway landings that are extra large. I love those!

Hidden Book Shelf Doors
Should a home library have a secret door? I think so! Do the books fall out if you swing the door too fast?

This secret door slides. Does it get too heavy to slide easily? No knickknacks either on the shelves.

Is this one secret enough?
A Basement Library
A library snuck into a basement … with that beautiful spiral staircase!

Storage and bookshelf space going down the stairs to the basement or anywhere!
Kids’ Room Library Spaces
A ladder seems like a necessary indulgence! Do you dare have one with kids?

Kitchen and Bathroom Libraries
What a perfect place to store cookbooks and cap off an appliance!

Book storage in the bathroom. Why not? Everyone would read more!

Book Shelf Ideas for a Home Library
Built-in cubbies for books. Is this easier than built-in book shelves? It has a modern flair.
A classic built-in frame anchors the living room. I think I would add doors to the lower shelves for messy storage.

very interesting and unique ideas
Thanks Jean!
Such beautiful ideas! I love the sliding bookcase door.
Hi Maryanne,
It was my favorite secret door too but my husband, a real estate developer, says it’s expensive to hang such a huge and heavy door that way. Ah, the voice of reality to spoil my fantasy!!
ahh! I dream of a perfect home library too. Your post has given me inspiration for my dreams 😉
Hi Jackie,
I’m so glad I am not the only one who fantasizes about the perfect home library! What fun to dream!
Such inspiring ideas. I want them all! I especially love the kids’ library, but would glad take any for my home. Still dreaming!
Hi Ruth,
The kids’ library is fun!!! My husband was worried that the ladder is too high and the seat too narrow. He’s such a worrier! This is a fantasy dude!
Really inspiring pics! Btw, I have started my journey with Pinterest not long ago and it scares me…But I felt the same way about twitter when I first started, so I hope the anxiety stays just for a little longer and then goes away.
My parents have a huge library in their house and I love reading there. They didn’t plan to have it but initially, on the house plan, this space was supposed to be a garage. But my dad wanted to have a bigger garage a few meters away from the house.
No ladders, no secret doors – but it still is awesome. I guess the smell of old books makes it so!
Hi Alexandra,
Ooohhh! I’d love to see a photo of your parents’ ex-garage library! It sounds wonderful!!
Hidden door – yes!
Great inspiration!
I would love a library in my house!!!
Hi Ann,
I dream of hidden doors!
Great ideas!

Hi Chubskulit Rose,
Thanks for hopping by! I will come by as well!
It will certainly be so cool to have one of these home libraries. I’m having problem storing away the kids storybooks into suitable nooks in the house.
Hi Dominique,
