Graphic novels are great to kids to realize that reading is fun. While most graphic novels seem geared for boys, I’ve found a few great ones for girls. Check out the trailer at the bottom for Smile, our very favorite graphic novel for girls!

Q is for Queen Bees and for learning how to deal with them in the Baby Mouse series by Jennifer and Matthew Holm.
R is for reading and reluctant readers. Graphic novels and hybrid graphic novels are effective in getting kids who hate to read reading. Research shows that:

S is for Smile by Raina Telgemaier. Finally, a graphic novel for girls! Girl friendships are tough to navigate in middle school but Raina’s even more traumatized by her teeth odyssey after she breaks a tooth. We also love her latest one, a kind of sequel to Smile called Drama.
T is for this awesome trailer for Smile.

That trailer is awesome! And I love the way you’ve worked research into these posts.
Hi MaryAnne,
I’m so glad you liked the trailer! Her graphic novel is AWESOME! I don’t know any girl who didn’t love it. I’m glad you noticed the research. I was hoping to convince folks (as I had to be convinced) that graphic novels truly are a genre that helps kids read! It’s not just fun but educational serving to get the reader to inference, an important reading skills that will cross over to other genres and life in general!
it’s great!
