Custom Book Plates for Kids
I’m always looking for ideas to get kids reading and sometimes little toys do the trick. Grasshopper and Sensei started working at a commercial art studio in town, doing an old fashioned apprenticeship in exchange for art lessons.
We discovered these beautiful book plates that you can get custom printed with a child’s name and the nice folks at Felix Doolittle offered to do a giveaway.
A set of bookplates, 25 customized self-adhesive labels, are $40.
You can choose any of the designs but these are our favorites. Which one is your favorite?

I thought these were so sweet for a little girl. It’s a perfect gift to give a grandchild with some books, or just the plates for a niece, goddaughter or your daughter!
My 2nd grade son likes the mountain lion the best but then he does love all big cats. He also liked all the coats of arms plates as well.
p.s. One caveat: you must have a shipping address in the USA please.
Congrats to Ann of Doodles and Jots! She won!

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Love Feelix Doolittle!!! Maybe the Unicorn!
Hi Ann,
Do you use book plates in your children’s books? I am wondering if that is a really old-fashioned thing to do. I typically stamp it with a pretty return address stamper that I use for our mail. But now I am thinking that having kids write their names in the book plates and put in their favorite books is a nice way to practice writing as well as make their favorite books feel special.
These are lovely! I like Crab Chase.
My favorite book is East of Eden.
Hi Asian Mommy,
I was so happy to discover Felix Doolittle, both as a place for art lessons for my oldest and for his lovely artwork applied to useful items like book plates. Thank you to his wife Loren for offering this giveaway!
I like the Mountain Lion, too. It’s so regal – What wonderful book plates! I had some as a kid and they were so fun to carefully paste inside of my favorite books; this is a great idea for kids.
Hi Jeanette,
I am leaning towards the mountain lion myself! If you win, who gets the book plates? Split them between your two kids?
It’s been wonderful getting to know Pragmatic Mom, Mia and her family! Thank you Mia for hosting us!
I also wanted to share this experience with your readers: A few years ago, I was looking through my parents’ home for books from my youth that my son might be interested in. I came across one book that boasted not one but four bookplates on the inside cover, all rather askew. The name on the bookplates was grandfather who was an exceedingly careful and measured man. I realized this had been his book from when he was a child, and that he either felt very connected to this book or he liked his bookplates so much that one was not enough! Either way, it really formed a connection to the power of books and their importance in the lives of families and potentially through the generations of families.
By adding a bookplate on favorite and beautiful quality book, it reinforces the importance of books in the family’s life and values. We hope that while kindles are very convenient, the art of the book, the paper, the physical experience of touching and turning the pages endures.
We wish all of you the best of luck in winning.
Hi Loren,
Book plates are a wonderful way to make books special and I especially love your story of how bookplates can create a sense of history as well. I think a lot of my readers want to win your wonderful book plates but I suspect it will hard to decide which one to choose!
I think “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry was one of the first books to have a real impact on me – followed by “Children of the River” by Linda Crew. I like historical fiction 🙂
Oh, and your tweet looks kind of funny the way it automatically comes up in the contest entry – thought you might like to know.
Hi MaryAnne,
PickyKidPix is reading Number the Stars right now. I’ll have to get her Children of the River next. She says Number the Stars is good and this is her first foray into historical fiction. Yay! Another genre that she will read! She is also reading One Crazy Summer, another historical fiction book that won a ton of awards, and after a slow start, now is enjoying it too.
So wonderful to discover your blog by way of Felix’s site! I’ve ordered gifts from Felix Dolitle but now that I have a baby of my own with a growing library, I’d love to see these plates in some of those books we will keep over the years. My sons name is Gareth, so for that reason alone I love the Coat of Arms!
Hi SassySasskia,
Thank you for your comment and I’m so glad to share a love of Felix Doolittle products with you! You are entered to win and I hope you end up with the Coat of Arms book plates one way or another! Perhaps it can also go on a holiday wish list!
