How to Prevent Skin Cancer
I want to thank my dermatologist and Mom Friend, Dr. Madeleine Krauss for Krauss Dermatology, giving me stern and consistent warnings on the importance of wearing SPF 30 sunscreen and a hat daily. I think about her on those days when I thought I’d be outside at school pick up for 5 minutes but end up at the playground for an hour without sunscreen on. Those are the days I hope I don’t run into her but that is just my guilty conscience talking.
She is also that generous neighbor who supports the community around her and can be counted on for a donation pretty much any fundraiser from the public library to the Historical Society to our elementary school. She’s also passionate — more than any other doctor I’ve ever met — about preventing cancer and in her case, melanoma specifically.
GIVEAWAY! I am giving away Elta UV Sunscreen!
Congrats to Jackie who won the giveaway!
The statistics around melanoma are astounding:
- One-in-50 Americans has a lifetime risk of developing melanoma.
- In 2009 nearly 63,000 were diagnosed with melanoma in the United States, resulting in approximately 8,650 deaths.
- The projected numbers (according to the National Cancer Institute) for 2012 are even higher with 76,250 diagnosis and 9,180 deaths.
Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States and worldwide.*
The latest medical research indicates that tanning beds are worse than sun exposure and should be avoided. Preventing melanoma is as simple as wearing sunscreen and a hat daily, habitually. Sounds simple enough, right?
Dr. Krauss is making this personal. She is donating $1/Like towards Melanoma research. Please LIKE her Facebook page. Your LIKE can save lives. Thank you!
If you need more persuasion as to why you should wear sunscreen, please watch this video titled Dear 16-Year-Old Me.

Hi Vanita,
Yikes, you need to win the sunscreen to get you sun safe. Even women of color, like me, need sunscreen!
Skin cancer is a terrible disease. My uncle passed away a few years back from it and I know the effects it causes on the family. I always make sure that I have sunscreen for myself and my family!
Aaron
Hi Dadblunders,
Thank you for sharing the story of your Uncle. My derm is hoping to get the word out about the importance of sunscreen. Thanks for your comment and I hope you win the sunscreen!
Usually whatever is nearby – neutragena 45
Hi Capability:Mom,
I like Neutragena too.
Thank you so much for this post! I am the palest person you’ll probably ever see, as are my kids and husband, and I slather sunscreen all over my kids constantly. (Me, too.) Skin cancer is some nasty stuff, and I really am hoping beyond more people wearing sunscreen more often, tanning salons are phased out. Yikes. Liked the Krauss Derm page, too!
Hi Artchoo,
Gad, it would be great if tanning salons were phased out. I keep reading that tanning salons are worse than tanning in the sun. Thanks for Liking Krauss Derm page!
Awesome post! A few years ago, I was diagnosed with my first skin cancer. A basal cell on my forehead. Now I a left with a “3rd eye” as a reminder of my earlier stupidity in not using sunscreen. I’ve also had 2 moles removed on my back, under my bra strap. Yes, one was on it’s way to melanoma. Thank goodness we caught it. Now I have skin cancer checks ever six months, limit my time outside, and use sunblock 24/7, 365 days a year. I’ve lost several friends to melanoma over the years. I’ve watched them go from diagnosis to death and yet I continued to use tanning beds. Yes, stupidity on my half but the crave for wanting to look tan versus pale was stronger. Again, now I’m paying for it and will for the rest of my life. Thanks for the awareness!
Hi Brenda,
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I’m glad that you survived your ordeal. The latest research I read indicated that tanning beds do more damage than the sun which is scary. I hope your story will help spread awareness for the importance of sunscreen and hat and of avoiding tanning beds.
I really like the Neutrogena spray and I really like it when it comes with the small bottle of cream for face. We wear hats too!
Hi Ann,
We like spray sunscreen too but I think it feels so cold when it goes on. I’m using Neutrogena too! The face lotion sunscreen. It’s the only one that doesn’t clog my pores and make me break out. I wear a hat from my derm too. It’s hard when it’s hot because it makes me sweat more.
Good reminder. Can’t be careless about this! I am also very fair. We use neutrogena and aveeno spray. I also have this cream for the face that stays on good for swimming but I can’t remember the name. I’ll look it up.
Would love to try the new sunscreen.
Hi Kris,
