International Book Giving Day
Today is International Book Giving Day and the idea behind that is to give books to children to encourage them to read. Thank you to Delightful Children’s Books for alerting me to this event!
Her advice is simple. Please help by using your social media to get the word out about International Book Giving Day via Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Re-post, retweet, and repin when you feel moved to do so.
Collect used books from others. We are encouraging people to engage in simple acts of giving (e.g. give a book to your niece). However, for those of you who would like to do more, consider holding a book drive. Holding a book drive can be as straightforward as setting out a box at your school, church, or community gathering spot, collecting used books, and donating the books to a local library or a nonprofit organization that distributes books to kids in need.
Book Dads had these great ideas:
Donate your books to your local second hand store, library, children’s hospital, or shelter. Alternatively, donate your books to an organization working internationally to get books in the hands of kids.
- Books for Africa (US)
- The Book Bus (UK)
- Pelican Post (UK)
Leave a Book in a Waiting Room or Lobby.
Choose a waiting room where kids are stuck waiting and there are few to no good books available. Purchase a good book, and deposit your book covertly or overtly in your waiting room of choice. The goal here is to spread the love of reading to kids, so choose a fun book, nothing controversial.
Whatever you are able to do, it is much appreciated! Thank you!
p.s. If you live near Newton, I posted on a place here to donate books to children who don’t own any. That is where my bag of books is going.

BEST #OWNVOICES CHILDREN’S BOOKS: My Favorite Diversity Books for Kids Ages 1-12 is a book that I created to highlight books written by authors who share the same marginalized identity as the characters in their books.
Another organization working internationally is Better World Books. You can donate books to them, and also buy books from them. They use books and also money made to help literacy projects around the world.
To Dee,
Thank you for the introduction to Better World Books! I’ll definitely make a donation to them too!
Thanks for creating awareness for this great cause! & great ideas! I am sure I have a box of books I could part with!
To Ann,
I know I need to do a big book purge. I think it’s harder for me than the kids because I love so many books!
