6th Grade Book Reviews by a 6th Grader
Please welcome my Mom Friend and yoga teacher‘s daughter Ajani who is a voracious reader, reading secretly in bed with a flashlight under the covers, way past her bedtime. She reviews four books that she borrowed from me this past summer and returns them to me along with her book reviews. She thinks these are great chapter books for 4th grade through 6th grade. Thanks, Ajani!
She’s the same age as my oldest and they have been friends since preschool. It also looks like they share similar tastes in books.
Witch and Wizard series by James Patterson
I love the Witch and Wizard series because I love magic and fantasy books. When I finished this book I went to the library to get the next book. There is a lot of suspense and surprises in this book.
Palace Beautiful by Sarah DeFord Williams
Palace Beautiful is not a book I would have read on my own. I would’ve thought it was too girly when I saw the cover and the title. But, in the end, I really enjoyed it, it’s a book filled with sadness and mystery. It’s a book that every child can connect to.
The Penderwicks at Pointe Mounte by Jeanne Birdsall
I have always loved the Penderwicks, it’s one of the only series that my sister and I agree that’s fantastic! I have to be honest and say that this one isn’t one of my favorites. I found that a Penderwick book without all of the Penderwicks isn’t as exciting. And some of the things in the book I found random or something that shouldn’t have been in this book. I did enjoy it but not as much as the others.
Nerd Camp by Elissa Brent Weissman
Nerd Camp was funny, but what might surprise some people, after they’ve read it, is that it’s about family. The family part is disguised you wouldn’t notice it at first. It took me a while too. Another thing I’ve noticed is that it sends a message: Be Yourself. It was a great and funny book I really enjoyed reading it.

Totally agree with Palace Beautiful, cover makes it seem like a young girly book but it had a great story. I actually liked the Penderwicks but it was my first one. Wonder if my reaction would have been different if I’d read the other two? Good reviews!
To The Brain Lair,
I actually loved Book #2 of the Penderwicks the most (The Penderwicks on Gardam Street). Then the first Penderwicks and the newest one last. I feel like Book #3 is just a set up for the last two books of the series … kind of a workhorse that is working too hard to support future storylines. I loved Palace Beautiful too but would have never bought it unless I read about it at Fuse #8 productions’ Newbery predictions last year. Great book though!
Great job with the review Ajani!
Great job Ajani! I think it is great you have young people writing reviews! The one that interests me the most is The Penderwicks.
To Ann,
Thank you for your kind comment. I will be sure to tell Ajani to read your comment. She will be thrilled! And I do highly recommend The Penderwicks series!
