Hate That Cat? No! Love this Novel in Verse for Kids
It’s a poem.
It’s a novel.
About Jack who hates cats but finds he loves kittens.
It’s funny.
His mother is deaf and he can sign.
His amazing teacher teaches him:
alliteration
and
onomatopoeia,
assonance and consonance (I said, “Huh? too!”),
simile and metaphor.
But the best part is that his uncle Bill, who is a stick-in-the-mud,
is allergic to cats.
Hate That Cat?
No, LOVE this book!
For ages 8-12.
And Love That Dog is the first chapter book in verse.

We used to use her Love That Dog book when we ran our little school. It is still one of my all time favorite books. Thanks to you now I’ve found her Cat book. Great blog you have!
Thank you so much! I love, love, love Sharon Creech!
I use these books with high school students as well. The students have been very creative in crafting both poems fashioned after famous ones and original poetry. They have loved the books and have been very creative in writing and illustrating poetry. I would recommend these two books for 3rd grade through high school age students.
Awsome book. My daughter had to read on Summer reading list and she chose Hate That Cat to do a project on.We enjoyed doing her project together. I love Sharon Creech stories now,We will read all her books from now on…
